I am looking for a tiller to use on a Kubota B2910 and a NH TC24D.

I would like the biggest tiller I can use on the TC24D that will still cover the tracks of the B2910 if that is possible.

How big of a tiller can I use on the TC24D? Is 54" a good fit? Can I go slightly larger? The TC24D has a 48" track, the B2910 is about a 54". The TC24D is 19hp at the PTO.

I like to be able to swap implements between tractors so I often have to compramise on sizes, but it gives me the flexibility to use either machine whenever I need/want to.

You should be able to handle a 58" tiller. The only time you will be close to the max HP needed fro the TC24D would be when you are tilling heavy sod and trying to till at maximum depth. A Gear drive tiller is more efficient in the transfer of power to the tines than a chain drive tiller.

Why is gear drive more efficient at transferring power?

Which brands offer gear drive?

Stronger Gears (no chain stretch), Less moving parts in a Gear Drive tiller, Less Friction in a gear transmission.
Most Tiller MFG's make gear drive tillers in their premium models.

Mark, I certainly wouldn't disagree with you on the gear vs. chain drive on a purely gut feeling; just seems that the gear drive should be stronger. However, I ran a Bush Hog RTS40, chain drive, for 7 years; don't know many folks who would use a tiller as much as I did, and used it pretty roughly. The manual recommended changing the grease in the chain case after 100 hours; I waited until I'd run it a couple of years, and did that, although it didn't appear to have been needed. Then I ran it nearly 5 more years, and pulled the cover to check it and decided it didn't need anything done to it. Of course the tines were about 50% worn down. And a cousin has been running a Bush Hog RTS62 on his New Holland TC29D for a few years; heavily wooded property so lots of roots. One little area had been cleared with a dozer with rippers on the back and he caught a root that was big enough it came up, hung and bent the heck out of that rear hinged flap, but no other damage; no maintenance.

So, even though from a purely emotional feeling, I like the gear drive, that wouldn't be a factor at all for me in selecting a tiller.

Bird,
I was only talking about the efficiency of a gear transmission over a chain transmission. The chain transmission is just a way for a MFG to cut some costs. The average customer in the USA using a tiller does so 4 hours a year. The chain drive can handle even 200+ hours a year but Bob Skurka wanted to know how he could maximize the use of his TC24D's HP.

Four hours a year? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Be hard to justify the cost wouldn't it? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If given the choice, you would like to have the premium transmission at the same or lower price wouldn't you?

I was talking about justifying the cost of any tractor powered tiller for 4 hours a year, but yes, given the choice for the same or better price, I'd take the premium model. But if all I planned to till was 4 hours a year, I'd have kept my little walk behind tiller.
