Try checking at

www.just8ns.com

they have new and used 8n and NAA parts

also try:

www.8nford.com

he has tons of old N parts.. many not lsited.

Also check

www.dennis-carpenter.com

he sells repro stuff.. he bought much of the old ford tooling and makes repros that are 'exactly like the original".

95% of my parts for my fleet of fords have come from those 3 places...

Also.. DEFFINATELY check with restoration supply company.. I just flipped open their catalog.. thermostat housing for NAA and hundred series thru 4000 is stock # F502 and is 29$

DOH!

Right after I posted my last message (and before I saw your list of suppliers) I called the NH dealer I go to for parts, and they had one in stock (!!) which I went and bought.

I will definitely bookmark those links though--the only one I'd heard of was just8n's, but the other three look like they'll be very useful in the future. Thanks!

Anyhow, I bought the housing from the dealer. Comparing it to the old one made me realize just how pitted and corroded the old one was.

The suggestion to use a little tiny bit of gasket sealant was good--I picked up some "super tacky" gasket sealant that said it was for holding paper gaskets to parts (sounded like just what I needed) and used a little of it to hold the gasket, thermostat, and housing together while I seated and tightened it down to the engine. Filled it, started it, and it leaked not a drop.

I ended up going engine : gasket : thermostat : housing. It's not what the parts manual shows, but looking at the housing and thermostat it's the only way that makes sense. And the thermostat was stamped with "TOP" on it--the bulky part with the spring was the bottom, so I guess the new-style thermostats are the same as the old.

It definitely helped with the cooling problem. I put the mower on and mowed the swale in front of my house (pretty thick grass because I don't mow it often...), and the it got up to about 3/16" below the red area and stayed there. Certainly better then right-on-the-line, which is where it used to be.

One of the things I noticed while looking through the parts catalog and online vendors was that both 4 and 6 (for "torrid zones") bladed fans are available. My fan has 4 blades--do you think a 6-bladed fan would make a difference? Texas summers are certainly torrid by my standards. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Try this test.. get your tractor up to temp.. whereever it's high temp is...take your gargen hose.. turn it on.. run it ove rthe radiator core from the front.. not a full stream.. just a bit.

If it significantly helps cool.. then I'll bet a 6 blade fan will also help cool a bit better.

I'm really surprised it's running hot.. the cooling ystem is a bit oversized... I still think that the inside of that radiator probably has a good bit of scale in it, and it is effecting the heat transfer..that's why putting in a thermostat helped.

If I were you.. before I bought a fan.. I'd run a strong water/vinegar soloution thru it a few times.. say set aside a sunday and run your 50/50% souloution thru it for an hour plus. Might use a couple 4 bucks of vinegar... but I DO think it will help. ( hint: drian and save your coolant for re-install.. )

Flush with clear water after that., then reinstall your coolant that you saved from t he draining earlier that day.

Gabe, I have a four-blade fan on my Jubilee. It has never overheated unless the radiator fills up with grass lint. I'd say your money would be better spent on having the radiator acid dipped and cleaned at a radiator shop than in replacing the fan. When I got my NAA, the fan was bent an I replaced it with a new one. It was $90. That was over 10 years ago, so there's no telling how much a 6-blade will cost, but for that amount of money, I think I'd sure consider the radiator shop route. After all, if you have part of the core that water is not going through, it won't do any good to move more air through that area. I think the 6-blade fan will only delay your radiator work. If the tractor is running some cooler, I think I'd just stick with it like it is. As long as you aren't boiling off water, what's the problem? Running a little warm won't hurt anything.

I didn't know there wasn't a problem. If it's OK for it to be running warm, then I'll just leave it as-is for now and have the radiator serviced if it starts getting up to the red line again.

My next project is rebuilding the carb (still can't idle below 1000 RPM's without surging...). Wish me luck. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Do the vinegar flush.. cheap and easy.. and fast. Save your af from the drain to reinstall.

If it won't idle low.. your idlejet may be plugged.. might also look for a vacume leak..
