What to buy to pull things with? rope? chain?

Just a SWAG but if your lift is rated at 24" behind the pivot (I assume thats what they mean by "behind") then at 48" it would have half that and so on. For exmple if it will lift 1000 lbs at 24" then only 500 at 48". I think- someone correct me if this isn't the correct logic:cool:

Thanks for the link, If I'm interpreting the picture correctly, a boom pole is used for lifting heavy objects with the 3ph some distance away from the tractor. I know what the lift capacity of my 3ph is 24inches behind but how does one calculate how heavy they can lift with a boom pole (without pulling the front wheels off the ground?

Since the 3pt is a parallelogram linkage the BP will pivot very little as is rises - especially in a part of its travel I call the sweet spot. In this area you will be able to apply upward force equal to that available at the ball eyes anywhere on the BP. As far as lifting the front wheels, I suggest trial and error, adding weight in the FEL if necessary.

What a shame. It just didn't need to happen.

Someone should have realized that the small shackle was likely to break. I wonder if anybody is kicking themselves for not speaking up?

I have not read through all of the replies. But my rule of thumb is to ALWAYS place the "weakest link" at the tractor end. This way if there is any "spring" in the line it will launch itself away from the tractor.

Just my $0.02

Gary, I'm not a physics major, but that sure does make alot of logical sense. Anyone else employ this strategy? almost like having a shear pin at the tractor.

All responses are pretty good and informative. I always pull stuff (logs and what have you) from the draw bar below tractor CG (center of gravity), I use a combination of nylon strapping and a chains (3/8" grade 43) for my light application. Being the chicken I am and allergic to bodily injuries:D and not having a proper ROPS use man made up safety device in the form of a small looped strapping out of tie downs or a piece of nylon rope in between the chain hook and the main nylon sling. Nylon slings always go around fallen debris to choke and grab (unlike chains that may slip) ,then my small loop that is not very strong intentionally. This loop serves as my safety (same as shear pin). the loop is also attached to the chain and the end of the chain to my draw bar. Right or wrong my philosophy is should the dragee get stock to some unknown on the ground I would not come to a dead stop where my forward tire rotation to lift the tractor up and causing the tractor to do a summer salt backward with me being in the middle of the commotion. The cheesy loop will bust before tractor front tire comes up and I can easily replenish my " shear loop" and try it again. if I'm afraid of abrading the nylon strapping say when I skid a log, then I use two pieces of the chain one as choke , one to pull connected together with my " shear loop". With that set up I don't expect to have a whiplash by the chain or even the nylon strapping as it strapping is busy choking some irregular pieces of debris I'm dragging behind.

NEVER snatch hard with chain. I once tried to jerk out a Ford 8N stuck in a muddy creek, using a 40' 1" link logging chain. I had read somewhere that a good jerk can move a stuck object (but the chain has to be anchored to something unbreakable at both ends (rear tractor axle casing and hitch in this case).

Instead of trying a steady pull first, I used my GMC Jimmy 4WD and a good jerk to get the tractor loose. 25 foot of chain came shooting into the GMC (tailgate down); fortunately, I had removed the rear seats and installed a bulkhead behind the front seats.

The chain slammed into the bulkhead behind my head and piled itself on the floor. I could not believe it!

Way too much jerk, too small a chain. Older chains can have an unnoticed weak link in them too.

With mud, a steady pull is much more effective anyway - mud lets go reluctantly, and did in this case.

For skidding, chain is fine in my experience, as long as the butt of the log, rock, whatever, does not impact an immovable object at speed.

I haven't used cable much in this way, but for winching, it is usually advised to place a jacket or blanket over the cable, so if the cable breaks, it won't whip back.

Dennis, I don't think I have a need to use a jerking technique. At the very most I might do a "mild" jerk. But at that point I wouldn't want to put the stress on the tractor. I hate replacing parts I already own :D

I don't have ROPS, but it is at the top of my list when we can afford it. Also, have thought about welding a wire mesh across the ROPS for added safety.

Snowridge, good point about anything but chain not holding up to skidding.

So is it true that chain will not store energy and that if it does fail it will simply fall to the ground?
Every now and then you need that little snatch/jerk to get things moving. I had some pretty good size grape vines in the woods I was ripping out and I had to have that little "pop" to get them coming out by the roots. I use strictly chain and have been ok so far. I have some of the nice nylon seatbelt type straps but they will get ruined in the woods real quick. I just use them for stuck 4 wheelers, tractors and whatever else I manage to get hung up in muddy season. :)
