what to do with an old car?

Mine isn't even in the same category, but a couple weeks ago I stuck a low price tag on my old 4x4 Ranger and parked it out front. Nobody goes down my road so I didn't think much about it. Tuesday while out of cell range I got a call and text from somebody who was really interested in it... today I ordered a title to replace the one I haven't been able to find. I'll make just enough to pay the title fee, and cover the 10 ply tires I put on my Colorado last fall.
Generally I've found the better deals are found with parked cars out front with a for sale sign with the amount asking. You know what the guy wants and you know right off the bat if you're interested.

What I find funny is it seems we have some small time car dealers who like to park cars out on their front lawn with for sale signs. There are a couple of places I can think of on rural roads that seem to have a different car for sale every month out on the lawn. They never have the price on the car though LOL

I keep thinking of selling my mint 1997 Ford F350 Crew Cab XLT Lariat Diesel 4x4 pickup with a forged rod 7.3. It has 98,000 miles and has never been in the snow and last 5 years in the rain either. Has a Ford SvO built E40D and it's a long bed. Not 45 bucks either....lol

Wanna trade? My '97 isn't quite mint, has 200k, but no real problems.

The Galaxie, last I checked, something was wrong with the ignition switch and I broke the key off in it. I'll have to try hotwiring it...

Is it even legal to sell or give away a vehicle in that condition in CA?

You can legally sell the worst POS junker imaginable here, running or not. The only inspections are smog inspections on post '75 cars.

To get a post '75 smog car registered you'll need a smog cert (in the more populated counties, maybe not where the OP is). For a running vehicle you'd be smart to get the seller to smog it, in case it's got problems that need fixing. But a lot of vehicles are sold without smog certs. They may be used for parts or restored and then smogged.

It sounds like this is a pre smog vehicle which makes it more valuable purely because you can mod it without limitation. Smog vehicles need to get inspected and tested, which makes it harder (but not impossible!) to modify the engine and still get it registered.

Bring A Trailer has gotten upscale since the buyout. It's "curated" now. If you can get on there that's great as there's a lot of dumb money and cars often go for more than they're worth. But they don't accept many cars that actually need a trailer these days. Your next best bet is Craigslist (sorry).

Appreciate the ideas and advice.
I tried to get my wife to sell it in the 2006ish time frame, we had driven it a decent amount in previous years and then it started to sit. She was like "I'd like to drive it more"... but didn't. Then a few more years, I'm like, "sell", she's like, "let's get such as such fixed so it sells better" but didn't.

So I'm basically going to see if I can hotwire it started, then give an honest description and put it on CL & FBM, and use whatever proceeds on my projects

Price is a big selling point with me, no matter if it’s a vehicle or bag of chips at the convenience store. Too many people miss that point, or feel they can push it on you if they don’t list a price. I don’t speak salesmanese so if no price is listed I go right past.

I have sold a few cars and trucks on CL and lately FB Marketplace. They all eventually sell.
Pricing to sell means taking whatever you can get for the dang thing and don't talk to me about sellers remorse if you really are serious about getting rid of it.
20% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

My Ranger I mentioned could have sold for more money. It needs a lot of work though, and the guy who wants it knows what he's getting... he said if he puts another $1500 into it it will be a good truck. I would rather sell it to somebody like him than get a few hundred more from somebody who doesn't understand that the purchase price is just a starting point.

Ah, no. I figure it's worth 22 at least and I have all the service records. OBS Fords, especially 350's in 4x4 are hot numbers today. Sitting on 5 polished Alcoa's with 33 x 10.5 and a 6" lift. Front axle has been flipped tooo and it's a Dana high portal. Limited slip on both ends.
