I have an old 6' bush hog that's had the deck completely rotted out. The gearbox is good, but I don't know what I could use it for. Any suggestions?

Re-build the deck out of some sheet metal and still have a bush hog.

Turn the gear box sideways and run a buzz-saw (AKA man-killer) with it.

Turn it upside down and make a broadcast spreader that will spread fertilizer far and wide in a single pass.

Reverse the box by connecting the tractor PTO to the output and make a cement mixer.

As a final boring suggestion, you could just put it up on E-bay and get a few bucks out of it.

Why not make yourself a big old trencher out of that gearbox. All you would need is a shaft going out to the side. Add some pillow block bearings and a trencher blade, and you are set. You should build a housing for the trencher blade.

You could also build a post hole digger.

First buy yourself a new bushhog and then

Offer the gear box to some TBN-er that might need it, for a fair price.

You will be happy with a new hog and some poor sap will be happy to be able to fix their olde hog.

By the way mine is in very good shape and I don't need a gearbox!

That would be one fast spinning post hole digger.........

Already have a new hog!

Would it spin that fast at idle?

I could use a trencher or a post hold digger. I'm not envisioning the Trencher though....

Ive got 2 trenchers made from old gear boxes. they work wonders. Make sure the sheils is all the way around most of it.

I am fixing to trade a 6' bush hog for a finish mower, and really wish you lived closer, because I would love to have one that I could rebuild the deck on, to replace the bush hog I am fixing to get rid of. I need a bush hog, but the finish mower has a paying job coming with it, so I figure I better take it...

What is the gear ratio of a bush-hog gearbox? It could be 1:1, or 1;2, or maybe 1:3

It's probably about 1:2. Bush Hog pitches a blade tip speed of 14,800 fpm on the 48" mower. A 2 foot radius equals about a 12.5 foot circumfrence. This means that to hit 14,800 fpm the blade has to go about 1170 rpm. On a 540 PTO that's just about a 1:2 gear ratio.

Of course even if you only had a 6" diameter drive attached to the output of the gearbox for a trencher, that's still 1850 fpm for the trencher blade to be moving. How fast do most trenchers blades move?

My first rotary trencher I made was from a 1to1 cotton picker spindle box. with a 2inch blade. works real good needs tiller teeth though. My second had offset teeth and from chipper blades and they used a 1 to 2 gear box and mor teeth it works better the faster it goes.

I think Sandman2234 has some pictures of one he made.

David,

If you feel like driving West on I-10 about 3 hours I will give you a 6ft Howse cutter that needs work. It needs some deck repair, a new gear box, stump jumper, and blades.......it's free for the taking!

PM if interested.

Possibly a stump grinder out of the gearbox and 3 point parts...

Sure would like to see one of the home made trenchers. I could use something like that for sure.
