We got enough hits from FB marketplace that next time I'm going to ask for more money for this stuff (I've got a bunch more fence I'm replacing... need to put up the new fence first)

Why won't metal places take fence? I could understand if it was plastic coated. But even that is no worse than a car, for contamination.
I expect chain link fence is difficult to handle, process, & compact. It would hang up on conveyors. The garbage recyclers despise plastic shopping bags for similar reasons.

I'm replacing a couple thousand feet of chain link fence (it's too short and ugly to boot).

It's been up for 30 years here but is in decent condition otherwise for the most part. What should I do with it?

Options as I see it:
• drop it at the metal recycling at the transfer station - this would only cost me to rent a trailer, unless I finally pull the trigger on a dump trailer for myself
• sell it - would someone actually buy this?
• say it's free - would someone want it?

Opinions? check more at https://chain-link-fence-barrie.alertwave.net/
If the fence is still in decent shape, try selling it first—there’s a market for used chain links, especially for temporary fencing, gardens, or animal enclosures. If that doesn’t work, listing it as free should get takers quickly. Recycling is a last resort, but if you’re considering a dump trailer anyway, this could be a good excuse to get one. Worst case, scrapping it could still put a little cash in your pocket.

I would definitely try to sell it on CL. A few years back I was replacing a couple thousand feet of wood horse fencing with PVC. It consisted of 4x4 posts (many rotted at the base) and 1x8 rough cut boards. Figured they would make a decent bonfire, but then figured I would try to sell them on CL. Sure enough, one guy bought all the boards to repurpose after powerwashing the old paint off, and another guy bought all the posts. All involved were very pleased with the outcome. Give it a try.....nothing to lose.
My experience is if you advertise something free, nobody will want it. But if you advertise it with a low price, you’ll get multiple people who are interested. People think anything free is junk.

You've clearly never lived in New England. Best way to get rid of anything, no matter how useless is to put it at the side of the road with a "free" sign on it.

Nobody drives down my road so I have to advertise on CL.

" Chain link fencing. $500. If you take it down, $250"
Let them do the work and you get paid for it.

I've sold all I've taken down so far. Not asking a ton so people have been fairly snappy with getting it.
Had one guy drive 150 miles for a bunch, he was setting up an equipment yard.
Less work for me, plus money, I like it.
