I am going to look at a used John Deere post hole digger this morning. What items should I be looking for that would indicate the attachment has been run rough and is not a good buy? I bought my disc harrow from this establishment 2 years ago and there has been no problems with it. I do not know the model number yet (as I was looking through their fence) but I noticed it had a 12" anger attached. He is asking $400 for it which is cheap as compared to a new model. That low price is what is concerning me that there may be something wrong with the item. He said that I can hook it up and test it which I will certainly do. Thanks for your suggestions to look for.

Other than the gear box not much too them. Check the auger for straightness, oil in box, turns smooth and when it is running that it does not slip or grind.
Good luck

I might be a bit late here, but I would definitely hook that PHD to your tractor, if you can, before buying it. Not every PHD is created equal, and neither is every tractor, when it comes to the dimensions of their 3 pt hitches. It *should* fit, but would be nice to know about any issues before you plunk down the money and take it home. Used equipment is generally sold as is, with not much recourse if there are issues after the purchase.

Most likely it will fit and work just fine, assuming the gear box is good, and it should be a decent deal at $400. Let us know how it turns out!

Check the mating of pto to collar slipping on and a secure mating to it.

Ended up not getting it. No plate to identify make or model. Top of great box was covered in oil so I guessed either it was leaking or someone had seizures when trying to put oil in it. Ended up buying a single row cultivater. Good and heavy with options for bedding wheels and furrow attachment.

Keep looking and one will come around. I bought one a few years back for 275 and had to put new seals in it (about $25.00) and been prefect since then. Sure is handy to have around when needed!
