Diesel all the way. I'm not sure about the brand new trucks but my 2004.5 Dodge Diesel has plenty of power and gets great mileage. 21 to 22 Highway! It's 4x4 3500 6 speed with SRW short bed. I plan to keep it forever.

If I were you... I would seriously consider finding a used Dodge Diesel... either a 2004.5 or 2005 model. You'll have half your budget left to put back in the bank.

I cannot speak for the new Ram trucks. I do like Cummins engines though. A lot of guys like their Duramax powered machines. One thing is for certain... I would not buy a Ford Diesel. The last good engine IMHO was the 7.3L.

Good luck.

Yeah thought about the used truck again but I am just gonna buy New since I will be keeping it for awhile and used well just dont know what your getting.

Have a '10 Chevy 2500 gas that pulls well. The only reason to get the diesel is if you pull a lot. Higher motor and fuel cost won't pay off on the diesel unless you use it for pulling a lot. Pulling weight will make the difference on the 3/4 to 1 ton and single or dual wheel questions.

Sync system is nice, but you can connect your cell to the GM products using the same Bluetooth the Sync system uses. Difference is the sync system has that nice big screen up front in dash. GM's navigation is just given by voice commands and text instructions on radio display.

Your in 1 ton diesel dually territory in my opinion! Maybe 1 ton SRW diesel...

I would even consider buying something bigger than a pickup... something like an F650... You know like a beer tractor trailer. I know there's some nices ones out from Ford, GM and maybe Freight liner. A lot of guys use this size to pull big 5th wheels. Plus you can get CAT engines in some of them! Purrr power!

Definatally a vote for diesel from me.

With the loads you are talking, even your tractors, it is really going to labor a gasser. Gassers are for CUT's and SCUT's. You are looking at what appears to be a 10k towing load at a minimum. With the tractor + trailer.

I have a smaller tractor and even went diesel dually this time. VERY nice. I didnt buy new though. I guess it was all the emissions garbage and DEF/urea that scared me away. SO that is also something to consider on these newer diesels.:confused2:

I can relate a little since we've used a '99 F-250 PSD, 6spd. for farm towing duty for years, this past year dad got a '10 3500 cab-chassis Dodge, 6.7L, 6pd. He's a die hard manual transmission guy (as am I) and Dodge is the only choice still left in that market.

Anyways, a few observations on the new truck vs the old. The dodge definitely handles big trailers easier. Dually, heavier springs, better brakes, etc are all nice for towing. As far as power goes, it definitely has more power than the 7.3, but it is less useable IMO. If you get the right gear and right speed it will put an 18K trailer up hills pretty quick. BUT, the power range is very limited. Torque below 2,000rpms is non-existent, and it red-lines just a little over 3,000rpms, so there isn't much to work with. Wouldn't be a problem if it had 9+ gears, but as it is it's not optimal. Off-idle torque is very poor compared to the 7.3, with the dodge if you don't give it some throttle when you are trying to get a load moving it will stall out, not the case with the ford. Fuel mileage is about 10mpg for both when towing about 15-18K.

I'm not bashing the dodge, it's a great truck and tows much better than the old ford. However, I think these new 'high power' diesels are way over-rated. Sure it makes huge HP and Torque numbers, but it's in a very limited rpm range. Heck, it feels like my old gas powered F-250 (460) has more low end torque. Maybe that's why they've all gone to automatics nowadays, to better use the peaky power, IDK.

Personally if I were buying a new truck it'd have a gas engine, ten years ago I'd have gotten a diesel.

I started buying diesel trucks in 2004 one in 06 and 08 and I will never go back to gas. If you need to tow it's not all or nothing it's diesel or nothing for me. I tow a 34 ft enclosed trailer with either a car or my tractor in it and I have 10k behind me. I once towed half a house that was dismantled and placed in my trailer and I tipped the scales at 24.5k total. I pulled through the adirondacks and passed a gaser going up hill (two lanes in my direction) gas is something you pass not something you own

I'd go with a diesel pulling those rigs. If you go with a gas burner I recommend Ford, their auto transmissions hold up a little better than the competition. Diesel with auto, hard to beat a Duramax. If you want manual, that Cummins will serve you well. I love my Duramax, just rolled 100000 and almost broke in!

I have had them all, the 7.3 is a great motor if you don't mind rebuilding the trans every 40k and the cummins is the same. They just devour automatic trannys. I have had 5 or 6 6.0 PSD and they pulled good but .... Well you know the rest. I now have a 09 F 350 drw with a V10 and that is a nice combo but 8-9 mpg is a kick in the stones. I also have a 11 F350 SRW 6.2 gas that gets 15 ish mpg but does not pull near as nice as the V10
