I have a 20 acre field of hay that I will be cutting a couple of times a year just to maintain it. I am going to try to find someone who would want to bale it, but failing that, what is the best way to cut it (flail, brush hog, sicle bar, etc). I have a NH 1715 compact tractor so limited to 5' attachments. Thanks for any suggestions.

Ken, if he were going to bale it, the sickle bar would be good, but since he said "failing that", I would guess he's meaning to cut it and leave the clippings where they fall. If that's the case, would you not prefer a brush hog for price, ease of use and maintenance, and to chop up the vegetation?

Twenty acres is a lot of mowing for a compact tractor. I would check with the local forestry dep't about doing an "agricultural burn" every year or so. In N. Georgia all we need is a 3' cleared apron around the field and call for a permit.
