What type of fuel caddy?

/ What type of fuel caddy? #21
1*I would not use anything that is not approved for the purpose it was designed for.
2*Plastic gas and diesel 5 gal tanks have approvals on them this is to protect you.
3*Lets say I have 100 gals of diesel in a building and it catches on fire, firemen start fighting what they think is just a shed.
4*The tank ruptures and 100 gals of diesel comes rolling out at them .
5*There is no dike to contain the liquid.
now you have a potential of harming the people that responded to the fire and 100 gals of fuel in and on the ground.
6*Next the insurance investigator shows up with the fire marshal and then they ask where is the dike and the placards where did you get the tank.
7*Oh I got it from from the Laundromat whats your recourse now after they give you a bill for $200.000 for cleanup.
8*And what if the tank just fails is the guy at the laundromat or the soap mfg going to pay for the cleanup, thats why tanks are EXPENSIVE product liability ins.
9*You might see some pic's of someones tanks on here but there are allot of violations there.
10*I'm sure the insurance co would have firm ground to not pay the claim with those pic's in court if anything happened.
1*The tank (s) IE drums are made of the same stuff as the 2 and 5 gallon cans approved for diesel.
I still don't see any deifference in having 30 gallon of diesel in a 30 gallon drum VS having the 30 gallon of fuel in six 5 gallon cans.
I do see 3 or 4 5 gallon cans of diesel stored in a garage basement or worshop as much risker than a single 30 or 55 gallon drum of diesel kept in its own small shed well away from any other buildings on the property.
2*What makes you assume that the 30 and 55 gallon drums aren't?
3*- 8* 100 gallon is one thing but 30 or 55 gallon is another issue.
9*What makes you so sure of that.
10*I don't if they are trying force a person to comply with rules that don't apply to them or the situation .

The answer is APPROVED ,That little STICKER or LABEL that is on the drums and cans. That's the one the EPA,Fire Marshall,Insurance .co will be looking for if you have a problem, and if it ain't there your in deep $$$$

Well I use an industriel 20 gal (squarish drum) and have adapted a Harbor Freight type hand crank pump (less than $20.00)
This I strapped onto a preumatic wheeled hand cart and the pump has about 8 ft of fuel line.
That little crank pump is just a wee bit faster than my filler screen likes, but otherwise the setup works just great.
As to storage, it sits outside, away from buildings and covered with a tarp.
Sure better than funnel and 5 gal plastic containers that forever spill at every use and get me smelly and ruin clothes.
Also 20 gals I can fill at the gas pump and cart home on my rear hitch platform without smelling up my vehicle.
20 gals of fuel is not so heavy that I can't manouver it by hand to unload onto the cart.
I'll post some pics shortly for any who might be interested.

Either one of these units will pump out of a 5 gallon can and filter the fuel at the same time.

Well put.!!

A person can:
1. "Think a container is the same as the ones in the store"
2. "Think the laws do not apply to them as individuals"
3. "Think that there is no difference in storing fuel the way THEY feel is safe"

But the bottom line is what will the fire marshal or insurance company think???

hey amigauser or anyone else,

I emailed Greg Smith Equipment about the gas caddy listed below and they did not answer my question about what approvals this caddy has? Does anyone know? Its about the best priced metal caddy that I have looked at, but I believe I still am looking for a caddy with UL and/or FM approvals. Not heard from my homeowners insurance agent regarding these fuel storage caddys. Just had a thought, I live in a small town and will also ask the fire chief.

I still don't understand why you feel you have to comply with Autp repair shop regs. when you don't have an auto repair shop .
