Sorry... I think now I had a 42M, or a 44M not a 46B, Cause what I had, had a clip and not tube feed.
What I have is a pre-1968 model 144. (No serial #)

I think it came after the 44....can't find much quick history on it.

When I started shooting around age 14, I was 4'9" tall and had trouble with the team's rifles at the YMCA. They were too heavy, and I spent more time sighting them in from the last person that used them than I did shooting targets that counted. My father, my Boy Scout shooting instructor, and my Y coach got together and decided I should get a Remington 580. We went downtown to a local sporting goods store and picked one out. My father paid about $100 for it. The guy behind the counter asked me if I wanted it wrapped or would I like to carry it out? So there I am walking down the sidewalk in downtown South Bend carrying a rifle a block to the car. And people are looking at me and smiling because that boy got a new rifle! :)

Try that today. 😬

Anyhow, we took it over to an ancient gun smith that worked out of the back of his house. He did some work on it, installed peep sights and did some trigger work. We spent a little over twice the cost of the rifle on that.

It was and still is a very accurate rifle and brings back fond memories of my youth. I try and shoot it about once a year, as I do all my other firearms, just to get my eyes and hands on them.

As for shooting on the YMCA team, I'll have to say that our team was quite good. A little bragging. Every year we'd enter national mail in tournaments with the NRA. We'd shoot in front of witnesses, they'd sign the targets, bundle them up, send them in to the NRA and get scored. I have no idea how many teams/people were involved, but they'd rank you nationally. I was ranked 37th in the nation. 2 guys and 1 girl on my team were ranked higher. :) Hopefully there were more than 37 people in the tournament.:ROFLMAO:

I shot on my high school rifle team too. And I own the same Rem. 580 sights and all!

Nice!

Over the years I've thought about getting a 581, 582, some of the left handed variations, and the smooth bore version. But, I've had other hobbies that took my money. :ROFLMAO:

I've got some combination of Lyman and Redfield. I think the peep is Lyman and the hooded sight on the front is Redfield or vice versa? Different inserts for the front, but I always used the same one for indoor 50' range.

Thinking about it, it's pretty hard to miss the 10 ring. The only way you can miss is if the ammo is flaky, you flinch and jerk the trigger, or you hold your breath too long and your pulse starts moving the gun up and down. Otherwise, stop breathing when the white circle is even and squeeze. 10! 10! 10! 10! 10! ;)

Thinking about it more and looking at some pictures, I think it was Lyman sights on both ends.

For LD1.... :)

Thanks for that. Didnt really know much about the rifle other than it was a cheap bolt gun I bought at a swap meet because I had some $$$ to burn.

Didnt know it had an adjustable trigger.....now Im gonna have to get it out and do some tinkering....lol

I like the old school peep sights, but I bet this gun would be scary with a scope fitted. Probably punch the same hole over and over again.

Another display of guns confiscated by police in New Orleans. It looks like no one carries a revolver anymore. The few police in the NOPD appear to be doing a great job. Now if only the DA would prosecute the offenders and then if the judge would sentence them we could eliminate some of the crime.

I have to laugh when ever I see a revolver with a "silencer." :)

My memory isn't so good any more, but I think to get the best groups, we used subsonic 22.

Regarding the purchase of used vehicles. Bought a paneled van and went to Canada with it with my speedboat and visited most all the islands in the Canadian side of the Puget Sound. On the way back to the USA, the border authorities were very interested in it and where I had been. I straight told them I'd been to almost all the islands, and ran off the list of the ones i could remember. They nearly did a total search, which no one wants. I just said , "Uh, It's okay if you want to take the whole thing apart. Just let me and and my dog sit over here on the grass, in view, we're not going any where, and those were the magic words. But really, I was sweating, cause there could have been anything in those panels I didn't know about. :)
