I was ready to pull the trigger on a mx4700 rite up until the dealer gave me the soec sheet and it said it had a egr valve. I said you have got to be kidding me. Sum of the smaller kubotas like some models in the l series still don't have them. So i was just curious when they started this mess? I have searched the internet with no luck on a answer and the delaer could no help. They kinda acted like they didn't know what it was.

This years models are the first to have them I believe,
as the EPA has mandated that small diesel engines
exhaust must be reduced by what ever means necessary
to reduce the engines exhaust gas emmisions and particulates.

Its too bad as the engines can be cleaned with
exhaust gas purifiers much more easily and only
release carbon dioxide and water vapor if the engine
and valve train are in good condition.

They have been advancing the timing on the small diesels which
in turn reduces the emmisions but makes it miserable for the
new owner due to the excess vibration through the engines power band.

I would add a little sea foam in the crank case and fuel tank to keep the
carbon from building up on all the ports and valves.

Please be sure to check the crank case breather often for any buildups
from the crank case as it must be free to atmospere.

...you think EGR is bad now... just wait and see whats comming in 3-4 years.

Hint, hint. If you plan on buying a tractor that'll be with you for 20 to 30 years best buy now.

What? Is no one in love with Diesel Exhaust Fluid ?? :confused2::confused2:

Its the same old story, played out now several times over. The manufacturers can tune for low soot (particulate) or low NOx. Can't get both, at least not with current technology (mechanical injection). It so happens that when they tune for low soot, it also favors fuel consumption, so that is normally what is done. The result is that NOx is too high. To reduce NOx you have to lower combustion temperature. The way they do that is to deny the engine some oxygen, which is why they re-circulate the exhaust, since it is some O2 with mostly CO2. Less Oxygen, less heat, less NOx. Except that the exhaust gas has to be cooled, so that means heat (a lot of it) going into the cooling system.

The first EGR systems didn't use EGR coolers and depending on the flow rate, this engine may not have an EGR cooler either. Did you take a look under the hood ?

I'm not too worried about egr. I'm worried about getting an m7040 before they add def... When is that coming?

Tier 4A (interim) is 2012 with oxidation catalyst and DPF (except perhaps for the smallest engines)
Tier 4B with Nox reduction is I believe in 2014.

DEF is most manufacturer's preferred answer to Tier 4b at least for higher HP engines. A better deal than EGR with DPF. DEF has been widely used in Europe for a few years now.

I think it depends on what HP tractor you are getting. I believe there is a schedule that mandates what HP engines must follow the TIER ratings.

For mine, the M8540 (85 HP), the EGR came with the "-1" model. (Mine is an M8540HD12-1.) I don't know when the "-1" model came out, but it was probably in 2009 or early 2010. (Mine was made in beginning of 2010.)

My engine is a Tier-3 engine. I don't know if the "-1" made it a tier-3 or not... but I do know the EGR came with the "-1".

Honestly, I don't worry too much about this stuff. I remember back in the 80s when the big scare was unleaded gas. Everyone thought the engines would melt and armageddon (sp?) was coming. Yet today we have the best running engines ever. After the initial bugs are worked out, all these new emissions controls will be a non issue. Sometimes it takes a while, but technology really does come through.
