FYI, it wont hurt to let the driveway sit for a year IF you have a good sub base down ie 4in 2b modified stone. NOT BECAUSE YOU WANT A TRACTOR, because you just built the house and the drive will stabilize better if its left alone for a while (like a year). A more stable base = less chance of cracking.

The contractor will put in a base of modified stone before paving (he should at least) not concrete. You can have concrete if you want and then it will crack at every expansion joint. You know when they blacktopped over concrete on the highway when you hear and feel a bump every 20 feet for 50 miles.

IMHO, buy a lawnmower, shrink the lawn, buy a light duty brush hog and a good trailer. Explain to the co-owner that you need to use your 1/2 at times. He should be done plowing by now and if he hasen't disked or harrowed yet it should be done soon. Go get the tractor and use it for 2 months, or get a check. My father and I exchange implements and a wood splitter, we are 5 hours 1 way apart. If he isnt putting 5 hours a day on the 790, there is plenty of time for you to be using it.

Thanks.. We are very pleased with the house and everything.. As it is a lot of times, there are a few minor things we would have done differently with the house, but nothing we cant live with as is..

We thought about including money for the tractor in the mortgage, but we knew my truck was almost paid for and I was hoping JD would keep the 0% financing deal until I was ready..

The first paving guy was very pleased with the base of the current driveway.. he thought they would only have to add little fill here or there.. Im getting my second quote on monday so we will see.. Our builders told us the first quote I got would do the best job, but were usually quite higher than other ppl. The monday quote is from someone they said would do good, quality job at a very fair price..

FIRST: pave the drive. That makes her happy. See how much $$$$ is left. Then buy a nice trailer; transport tractor, but use up as much as the day as you can; smile, but say, "see how much time is involved going and getting the tractor, but that is ok, the driveway looks nice". Take the tractor back, take the whole day, take your wife with you, find odd jobs to do at dads house ( have dad ask wife to please help with this and that). After about 10 trips with wife, I would guess a new tractor may be in the picture.

Now that your looking at tractors, I think you need to forget what you wanted before and start again from scratch. Decide what your priorities are and buy for that. I don't remember what all your needs are, but mowing was at the top of your list, and getting it done quickly was also a big priority.

Buying a 4 foot mower is not going to mow very much land, very quickly.

How steep is your land? How much bush hogging will you have to do? If it's fairly level and you are mostly mowing grass, I'd seriously consider a bigger 2WD tractor. Something that can at least handle a 6 foot mower with even bigger being allot better.

Soundguy and I disagree on 2wd vs 4wd tractors allot here, but in this case, he probably has the perfect setup. Big 2wd tractor and a bat wing mower. He bought them used, did some work on them and has what will do three to four times the work your looking at for at least half the money.

Good Luck,
Eddie

Sorry I missed your post and just now went and re-read all the posts..

im looking at the JD 2320 /w mmm/fel/rotary cutter.. I was originally looking at the 2210, then the 2305, then found the 2320 and like it due to the true cat 1 and higher ground clearance with about the same frame size. For my needs I think the 2320 is a good compromise for everything.. It will take me a little longer to rough cut the rest of the fields, but that just means more seat time..

A couple others things I missed or just didnt correct from previous responses: 1) We are on a paved road, not a dirt road, 2) We have about 1 acre of yard now, but I want to convert about 1 to 2 more acres into yard (or atleast keep it cut pretty short with the rotary cutter) eventually, not the entire 7 acres though..

thanks for all the help

Brian

So, what tractors are you looking at, Brian?

...And I firmly believe my wife just had a bad day when this whole "you dont love me unless we pave the driveway before you can buy a tractor" conversation started.. yesterday she ask " so when are you ordering the tractor?" I told here I would have to wait until our tax refund came in because we couldnt do both the driveway and tractor right now. her reply was "As long as we get the driveway paved sometime this spring or summer, I would go ahead and get the tractor quickly"... My thought was 'Bite lip, shut mouth and call dealer immediately to place order"' lol ...

Your thought was right - get that tractor on order NOW:rolleyes:   . The 2320 will be a good match for property maintanace type activities. If you are doing more "terraforming" type activies - rent a bigger machine as needed. The money you save not buying the backhoe will pay for several rentals. You'd be amazed at the difference a larger machine will make. I have a TC18 (similar in size to the 2320, less HP). Dad has a TC40DA - 3,500# 40HP, I've also run a 15,000# volvo backhoe - what a beast.

Hey, go get that new JD with all the "stuff" included. "It's easier to ask for forgivness then to get permission" or however that saying goes. What's the worst that could happen? Who wears the pants? Life is short, go for it, man!

Wait.......Wife is wanting me to vacuum.......gotta go.
