Tractor
Early 1949 Ford 8N
Can you tell me what year model this tractor is.
And any other info would be appreciated.

From an ID plate on the dash left side.
Model MF 35
SNM 208314

Belongs to a neighbor and he thinks it is a 1952.
He could use a manual for it too (but which one).

Steering sometimes locks up when turning.
He is wanting to fix that.

Thanks.

1952 was still FERGUSON and not MASSEY FERGUSON. No 35's yet either. (TO-20's 1948 to 1951. TO-30, 1951 to 1954. TO35 1954 to 1959. MF35 1960 to 1964)

SNM208314 is a 1960 Massey Ferguson MF35, about 2/3rds of the way through 1960 production run.

Gas or diesel?

I'll check my stash of manuals tomorrow to see if I have one. I THINK I do. LET'S MAKE A DEAL!!!!

Is the "lock up" in the front end or the steering column? Steering gears wear out in the column.

The "SNM" is puzzling me. Is there any chance that's an SGM? (as in, Standard, Gas, Multiple disc clutch- All MF35's were standards, Gas or diesel, some 35's didn't have 2-stage clutches. Sounds like this one does)

Wow, thanks.
The lockup happens in the steering box.

If it was my 8N I would say one of the ball bearings on the worm gear
had fell out and was sometimes getting lodged in the steering sector gears.
But his is a Massey Ferguson. I don't know anything about those.

It definitely said SNM. It is a 3 cylinder diesel. Live lift and PTO.

Thanks.

You aren't far off in regards to the possible steering troubles.

Not trying to hijack you here Pooh Bear, but FWJ, can you tell me where you find your info. If it's publicly available I'd sure like to know where to find it. Keep spreading the knowledge.

I'll PM you with the answer on where I get serial # info. Some info I just picked up over the years. Getting old does have a few perks.

Bill, I agree that getting old has some perks-I keep forgetting what they are though.

Arthritis isn't one of them :( . The oncoming cold weather makes me feel way older than I should.

Forgot to ask, are new parts still available for this tractor.

Thanks.

Absolutely! AGCO supports these tractors better than some brands support relatively new models. There were so many of them built, and so many still on the job, the market for parts is a Godsend to Massey Ferguson dealers.

Also, aftermarket parts are abundant and easy to find. The Perkins AG3-152 diesel is the cheapest engine on the planet to overhaul. A complete parts kit will sell for just over $400. That engine was in production for near 50 years. It is probably the most reliable and fuel efficient engine ever planted in a tractor.

The list of age related assets is a bit shorter than the list of liabilities, isn't it?

OK, I dug aroud through another website and found something interesting. The 3 letter prefix "SNM" is an idication of "Standard" chassis configuration, "N" is a Perkins diesel, and "Multiple disc clutch" . All the earlier Ferguson/Massey Fergusons I'm familiar with were gas with middle letter of "G". Later (100 series on) Massey's all had a 9A prefix which didn't indicate Perkins diesel,Continental gas or Perkins gas engines.

Ya learns somethin' every day!

And no, I DON'T have an MF 35 manual. (Got MF50, MF65, and MFSuper 90 Manuals, and a raft of Ferguson manuals.)

WOW!! Everday I'm a little bit more amazed at the info I can get from these forums.
And here I thought SN = Serial Number. Didn't know what to make of the M.

I saw my neighbor for a bit yesterday and he loved getting the year model.
He is gonna really love all this extra info about his tractor.
And there is a manual for it on ebay right now for 6 dollars plus shipping.

Thank you so much for this.
My neighbor and I really appreciate it.
