Whats everyone do for a living?!?

Cut grass, worked in a auto parts store growing up. Got a B.S. in Agri Business, sold feed for a year and half, then got into the I.T. field, stuck there ever since. Would like to get back into agriculture the next few years before retirement.:thumbsup:

My first "real job" was shoveling 8 tons of blacktop a day as part of a crew on a summer help program designed to give high school aged kids a job. Back in those days the town crew resurfaced all the city streets. Shovels, rakes, hand rollers and whole lot of manpower! What an experience that was your feet got so hot you would think your work boots would melt oh and the smell would make you sick. The "boss" was immensely tall and thin fella aptly nicknamed Stringbean decent enough guy. The real eye opener was the dump truck driver. I asked doesn't he ever get out the truck and help? They said Never

Typical start as a paperboy, then got on summers helping neighbor with his contracting business digging up basements and fixing concrete foundations , tarring and landscaping. (So dumptrucks and hoes), went to college for drafting, but no money in it, worked at lumber yard with forklifts and 5 ton and jack of all trades, cash and sales even. Got on at the Uranium mines running the underground warehouses for the mechinical equipment, (anywhere from 2000 to 5000 feet below surface)
Took Purchasing courses at same time, got up to surface jobs (supply expediting) in mine before it closed and then got on as Buyer for Provinicial Government these past 20 years.........retirement is drawing near , ideally in next two to three years for hobbies that await.

Started out with a paper route at 14 and a year later worked in a supermarket stocking shelves (Friday nights and Saturdays only). Got an engineering apprenticeship at 16 and completed it at 20. Continued in engineering over the years doing part time and full time studies. Worked as construction labourer (while in university), millwright, ships engineer (Chief Engineer at 31 ), stationary engineer etc. Have had my share of being laid off but have always managed to find work within a couple of weeks. Managed to travel the world during those years and earn as I went. Have ended up living on 150 acres in central BC and have been retired for ten years almost. Could always do with more money, but we sure don't have to stick to any timetable - which is always nice.

Worked on my uncle's rice farm from age 10 until age 20 pulling weeds in seed rice fields. When I finished college at age 20, I went to work at the LSU rice research station doing research on fertilizer rates on rice for 2 years. Then took a job at University of Louisiana @ Lafayette as farm manager at their demonstration farm for 3 years.

Then spent 16 years at a farm supply company. The last 10 years at the farm supply company was as a location manager.

Then about 12 years ago, I started my own lawncare/landscaping company. I'm still at this job, and I specialize in athletic field maintenance and renovations.

I don't think I'll be able to retire until I die....

I'm a Legacy Nortel PBX Dinosaur. Still working on Nortel as well as Avaya, ShoreTel and our own Hosted VOIP. Started in 1979 with 1A2 Key Systems, then Electronic key, Mitel SX20, 100 and 200. Lots of other products along the way. Full time Nortel guy since 1991 when I got a real job instead of mom and pop companies. Got in the business by chance. I had Vocational Training my senior year of High School and was going to follow my Dad's career path in machine shop. I was only 17 when I graduated so I had about 3 months before I could take my job at a local machine shop, had to be 18. I went to work on a temporary basis, so I thought, with a job pulling phone cable. That was 35 years ago and I'm still in the business. I hope it lasts another 10 years or so. I will be 54 this year. It's been a good gig. Sometimes I wish I would have done something else. But the customer interaction I really like. Most people are nice to the phone guy.

Oh, wow, we sure have been down some of the same old dusty roads. I started in 1979 also. with 1A2 systems, then the NEC Electra 28 and NEAX 12's Worked on a couple of old NEC crossbars, but soon was working on my first SL-1A, and the full progression of Nortel pbx's and of course Norstars. BCM's and all related things. Last stuff I worked on was Avaya IP Offices. Several of those networked, including one system networked with systems in England, and Mexico. Along the way, did the Mitel SX20 and SX 100 and SX 200 too. No training for me to start.. Just OJT but of course there were Nortel schools later on. But most of it was, "here is the books, have at it". I never had much in the way of certificates, but I could put them in, program them, Train the end users on them and run service on them. Of the voicemail systems Mermails took about the longest to install, and the Avaya Voicemail Pro was about the easiest to get up and running. I would love to sit down and have a talk with you!
