Wrong!! Very much on topic and it works for me. A little plus is on a side slope you can swing the weight to the up hill side. In close quarters you do have to Think a little bit, it has never held me back and I often work in very tight areas.

Yeah...the question was what one use in their ballast box, not what does one use for rear ballast (note the title of the thread).
Nice thing about a ballast box is the compactness for the weight and ability to keep that weight low. They're relatively cheap even if you buy new ($200-$300), cheaper yet if you buy used (mine was $95 and filled with sand)...and real cheap if you build your own.

I've operated a backhoe (real one, not a CUT with an implement). If I needed to dig a hole or trench, it's the way to go...but I wouldn't want to use one offroad (in the woods, for example). Even with swinging the boom upslope, you've still got a lot of weight up high (just where you don't want it).
However, if that's what you got, that's what you use...
