What's in your Cellar? (Wine)

Re: What\'s in your Cellar? (Wine)

We started a collection for my daughter in 1988 when she was born. The intent is to give it to her on her 21st birthday.

I could not really afford good wines that would age well for 21 years. But vintage port, ice wines and desert wines hold up well so she mostly has that in her collection.

Every once in a while I get lucky. Our supermarket had a 1988 cab for 37 bucks. I bought it and then did a net search. Best price I could fine was well over $150. I still do not know if it will be palatable in 3 years but we will give it a test.

There is one winery in NH Flag Hill Winery .They hold a festival and you help pick the grapes at harvest time. For this you get a T-shirt, a wine goblet and a great meal. My wife and kid even foot stomped some grapes that were made into a wine.

Anyway his location does not allow for ice wine and of course the "noble rot" that makes French desert wines is not in NH. So to boost his sugar content he adds a NH staple - Maple syrup. It is not bad.

When we were full time RVers, we visited a few wineries. The best tasting wine, to me, was in Washington state where we visited 3 wineries, the most interesting was the Taylor Winery in New York where I got a really good price on a case of champagne, and the only one that charged admission was in Wisconsin, but I figured out pretty quickly why they charged. After tasting some of their wines, I wouldn't have taken any home if it had been free. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I used to visit a guy down in Orange, Texas who made his own muscadine wines and had tastings. I think the place was called "Piney Woods". It was great wine and I believe he won a number of awards through the years. I believe the old guy had a stroke and maybe his son took over. I always enjoyed parting with my money when I stopped in there, he deserved the business.

Turbo, that's pretty impressive. I could meditate there too but only through the first 3 bottles. After that coherent thought would be a little difficult. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We love wine, mostly reds. We do keep some white and White Zin for visitors. We don't drink much French anymore but I've found it to be a lot of fun experimenting with wines I don't know much about (with advice) from countries like Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, etc. Generally they're a little cheaper and still very drinkable and every now and then you can find a real gem.

I used to make my own wine both from concentrate and fruits. That was a lot of fun too. I gave it up after I had one batch go really bad. I had to drink one bottle as a matter of principle but my wife refused to touch it after the initial sip. She did say it made a great lime stain remover for the toilets though. I was just glad it was useful for something. You sure couldn't drink it.

Ah, Flag Hill Winery. It's just a small place. I go past there on my way to UNH for soccer. I have been tempted to stop in and see what's available. I'll be by there in early April so I just may stop and partake and maybe buy.

I'm pretty lucky as I like all types of wine; white, red, home made , in the box it's all good. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Spirits are good also!

Ripple!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Every time I buy a bottle of wine with a screw cap all I can think of is Drive-In movie nights and Ripple wine. I know the research says the screw cap is better but I still prefer the joy of popping that cork!
