Like many of you we get a free local newspaper delivered to the end of our driveway. Some homeowners are even lucky enough to have the newspaper sausages stuffed in their mail boxes.

Whats caught my attention is our newspaper carrier is delivering papers driving an early 2000s Chevy Monte Carlo SS. In good looking condition. Next road over a guy is delivering papers driving a late model Dodge Ram Crew Cab 4x4 5.7L V8 Hemi.

Maybe Im misinformed but I was always under the impression that delivering free newspapers isnt a high paying job. I cant imagine either of these guys getting enough money from delivering free newspapers to pay for the gas their vehicles are guzzling.

Am I missing something here?

Probably a third or fourth job. Or maybe they work for the publisher, but not really as carriers?

Our version of that is delivered by the mail carriers, who by the way mostly drive clunkers with the exception of a few who have right hand drive Jeeps.

I don’t know. To me it is kind of irrelevant what they drive. At least they’re DOING something for money and not sitting on their asses with their hand out.

We have a slightly different version of that around here.
Youll see a young man driving a late model crew cab diesel dually pulling a Harbor Freight trailer with a Walmart push mower, weed whacker, and rider.
He will have a Billy Bobs Lawn Care sign on the door. Seems like a cart before the horse situation. But like Big Barn said at least their a workin.

My daughter and her husband delivered regular newspapers for awhile and determined that after car maintenance, they weren't making very much money and found anther part time job to clear more.

Any stranger driving through our area about 6:00 would think that half the residents here were in the lawn service business; judging from the 20 something year old trucks pulling trailers with lawn mowers and weed eaters...and you better watch them! The don't seem to know those trailers are wider than their trucks and they often are over the center line.

I know - makes me wonder also. I, obviously, get mail delivery every day except Sunday. Yet - its cheaper to have at least three different folks drive by on various days of the week and deliver - free newspapers and various fliers.

Since the mail person is here every day - wouldn't it just be cheaper to pay the postal rate and have him deliver??? I guess not.

Maybe working for the newspaper in another capacity and part of the job is, "hey, drop these off on your way home"

The biggest reason why they don't just pay for them to be mailed is because of how late most mail is delivered. The people paying the cost of advertising want them delivered early that morning.
