Whats the difference between 4/6/8 hydro rollers?

I was looking for a PTO-driven pump for the boomer sprayer and I see several different prices from $59 to $259 at Tractor Supply Store and it had 4, 6, and 8 with 8 being high in price.

What's the difference, really? The boomer I am going to buy has 55-Gal water tank on it. I'm looking for something economically right now that will last maybe 5 years and hopefully longer!

Also, is there something else I need beside pump and regulator to get the boom sprayer to work?

This is a good document. The one thing I am not seeing (unless I missed it) is how does a roller pump mount to the sprayer frame? I am assuming, for example, if I purchase a 55 gallon sprayer from Ag Supply and the recommended roller pump and coupler I still need to buy a PTO shaft fit to length and what else. Is there a bracket that I need to mount the roller pump inline of the of the PTO shaft just like any other PTO driven implement? Should the frame of the spray be pre-drilled with hole or should I expect to have to drill holes for the pump mounting?

Mark, I'm glad you brought that up. I was reading the same info last night and was wondering if I would need to add something to support the rollers because my PTO area doesn't have anything to support any bracket that will help hold the roller in place. I might have to buy one or make a homemade one that I can take off when not using the roller.

If anyone has a pic of roller being attached to the PTO, that would be great! This might give us some idea on how to work with it.

I am more interested in seeing some real pictures and hearing some words of wisdom as to how it goes together. For example, they show a draw bar being used. I don't have draw bar and am not install one on my tractor just for this application. That said, how else can the mount be attached to prevent the pump from spinning on the PTO. Coupler application I think is self explanatory but feel free to share that info as well if you'd like. Agri-Supply does a decent job of mentioning what other part numbers you will need. In this case which pump is needed with the sprayer I linked. Of course with chemicals you could always upgraged.

I found interesting. Why don't you go for such sprayers (see attachment) with diaphragm type pumps? You don't need to worry about bringing components together. Italians are good in manufacturing such sprayers (although their prices are a little higher.)

Hey, I am not against implements that are all inclusive. IN FACT I prefer to buy pretty much anything ready to use out of the box. I just have yet to find a 3pt. sprayer that had everything ready to go off the truck. Got a source????

Furthermore, I am willing to pay a pit more for items that I DON'T have to do a lot of work to. Time is money to farmers but it is too when you work a full time job other than running a farm.

I used to have a 6-roller Hypro pump mounted on an angle iron frame on wheels along with a 25 gallon tank. It was powered by a 3 hp Briggs & Stratton engine through a "transmission" that reduced the RPM. It had a pickup hose, then a "filter" that was actually only a metal strainer, additional hose to the pump, then a hose to an adjustable pressure regulator, a bypass hose from the regulator back to the bottom of the tank so that provided the "agitator" for the tank. Then there was also a steel line (pipe) from the regulator to a cut off valve (ball valve) and then a 100' hose and spray nozzle. Of course, the 100' hose was a high pressure hose; all the others were simply pieces of 3/4" garden hose.

Corrosion will cause the pump to seize up. I learned to leave mine filled with anti-freeze when not in use and that prevented the corrosion. However, I also learned it's a simple job to take the pump completely apart so you can (1) reverse the rotation direction, or (2) clean out the corrosion. My glass bead blaster cabinet worked great for cleaning out the corrosion when I let the pump seize.
