Whats the difference ?

I think the easiest way to check it is to split them (on my 1700, there is a wire leading to the first plug, with a metal bar between the two), so remove the knurled nut on the two plugs and check the resistance with a meter. If one (or both) is open circuit, it is (they are) toast. If you don't have a voltmeter, you can probably use one of the circut checkers (light bulb in series with the plug and the battery).

You could also pull them out and take a look at them. Mine were clearly deformed (like it melted inside) when I took them out. Not sure that looking at them would tell you in all cases, though.

Thanks Chris,

I'll take a look and see if I can see anything obvious.

Chuck,

I used my tractor today. I used the glow plugs this morning to start it. I shut it down around noon. The temperature was around 70 degrees. As soon as I shut it off, I turned the key backwards and the glow plug light came on. So to answer your question...the glow plug light comes on no matter what the temperature is. It sure sounds like you have glow plug trouble or either a bad switch.

I took some photos of my new finish mower and want to let you see them but with the time change...I'll do it tomorrow.

Thanks for the info Donald. Sure soumds like it could be a key switch or the plugs. I'm going to spend some time going over it on Tuesday. With DLST I'll have a little more light to work on it. Still haven't ruled out the battery though. I think if the battery was low the glow plugs might not light either. Send the pics on the mower, Id love to see them.

Chuck,

Here are three shots of the Big Bee finish mower. The price was $975. Some of the terrain that I cut is sort of bumpy and it didn't scalp the ground. I was surprised! It has three blades. A hinged cover on each side provides easy access to the belts. Notice that the top is smooth so it won't hold water and will be easy to rinse off with a water hose.

If you have questions or comments on our New Holland 1720. You can e-mail me at dthomas@netpathway.com. Ooops...Looks like I am limited to one photo per post. E-mail me and I will send you the other two

Rick,

I was in WVA today and the tractor started fine. I'm really perplexed by this. The battery is F165. I brought it back with me in case it isn't the correct battery and I will see if the dealer will swap it for me. I'm hoping that the battery is the problem and is only acting up when it is cold. Let me know if it is correct. Thanks,

Chuck,

When it cranked this time, did you turn the key backwards and did the glow plugs light come on?

That is the correct battery! F165

Yes the glow plug light did light up. I'm going to check the plugs next time I'm over and make sure both are working. Thanks

Thanks for checking . I took the battery by the dealer on Friday and he did a load test on it. It checked Ok. He suggested I put a charger on it and reinstall it and check the glow plugs as Donald had suggested. I'll keep you posted. CHUCK
