Well, you can pay a pretty penny for them, but for your use you could go to Wal Mart and get one for $50-$60. Add $15-$20 for the air tank (plus about $5 to fill it) and probably $15 for 500 paintballs. So, you could probably equip yourself for under $100. Of course, you could also spend $1000.
Paintballs do inflict pain, no doubt about it. But, unless you hit the dog in the eye, you won't do any serious harm. The accuracy of paintball guns is poor, however. As far as marking up your property, don't worry about that. The paint fades pretty quickly. It is more like a pigmented gelatinous goo rather than paint.
