I'll bet a paintball gun and a few rounds aren't cheap either.
Anyone know about what it would cost?

Well, you can pay a pretty penny for them, but for your use you could go to Wal Mart and get one for $50-$60. Add $15-$20 for the air tank (plus about $5 to fill it) and probably $15 for 500 paintballs. So, you could probably equip yourself for under $100. Of course, you could also spend $1000.

Paintballs do inflict pain, no doubt about it. But, unless you hit the dog in the eye, you won't do any serious harm. The accuracy of paintball guns is poor, however. As far as marking up your property, don't worry about that. The paint fades pretty quickly. It is more like a pigmented gelatinous goo rather than paint.

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

WoW, all that pyrotech stuff, paint ball guns, etc looks like fun and I think ever tool collector worth his salt should own at least the top of the line model of them all, "But the arsonal of weapons a red blooded American male has and the relative short live span of Spot and Fido, I think the Jimmy Hoffa technic may be cheaper!" Geeh, this post has been a whole lot of fun and maybe the 'AMPS not Volts" would help me cure my little blue eyed paint horse from cribbing!

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

Not replying directly to you, roho...

It seems like using a pellet gun just serves one purpose, inflicting a little (hopefully) pain in the dog, but using the paintball gun serves two purposes, teaching the dog a lesson AND teaching the owner a lesson. I think it all boils down to the owner controlling his dog or the dog is just going to learn to avoid you rather than keeping off of your property. IMO. Also, I would rather my neighbors see me aiming a paintball gun at a pet rather than something that could be construed as a *real* gun...

That said... I have no idea what they use to make paintballs out of. If anyone goes that route (myself included) it's hopefully something non-toxic if ingested. Unless you're out to poison the dog.

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

Thanks Junkman. I knew that someone would know. It sounds as if it could be lethal though and I'm really trying to avoid having to kill this dog but it may come down to that. Man, I dislike people who let their dogs wander around unsupervised, most of the time it's not a problem, but I hate people who dump their unwanted pets in the country.

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

My method isn't lethal. I learned this during a college psychology experiment were we had to teach mice to run through a maze. They learned quickly to avoid the foiled portions of the maze. Never electrocuted a mouse, but did learn that field mice learned faster than pet mice. I use to use the oil burner transformer for checking spark plugs. Got shocked many times by it and I am still here to post.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Junk...

the paintball gun serves two purposes, teaching the dog a lesson AND teaching the owner a lesson.

I'm not sure that the paintball would mark the dog vividly enough for the owner to even know he'd been paintballed. When my son first got his paintball gun, we shot it at a playset in the backyard. While the colors were bright enough on impact, they faded very quickly and before long, it was like it totally evaporated. When he comes home from the painball fields, he's not all marked up with paint like you would expect (he is, however, bruised up from the impact of the paintballs). So, I know the dog would feel it, just not sure the owner would know what happened.

it's hopefully something non-toxic if ingested. Unless you're out to poison the dog.

I'm not sure what the "paint" is other than the fact that its not paint. I'm fairly sure its non-toxic. Paintball players get hit in the facemask all of the time. The facemask is vented with narrow slits and the paint gets through these slits and can get in the mouth. Pretty harmless stuff.

As I said before, I think the only way you could truely hurt the dog is if the painball hits them in the eye. That could do some serious damage.

Our latest amusement is what are called AirSoft guns. They shoot plastic BB's. The BB's are propelled by either a spring mechanism, compressed air or via an electric motor. These plastic BB's would not penetrate the skin but I don't know how much sting you would get out of them either. The spring operated guns are pretty weak (my son shoots his indoors without causing any damage). This past weekend, I bought myself an electric version which propels the BB's at about 280 FPS at the muzzle and can fire in full auto mode at about 800 rounds/min. Some more expensive models can acheive even greater velocity. Although I have no 1st hand knowlege, my guess is that this would sting a little. I'll probably need to have my son shoot me with it so I'll know for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Also, these are more accurate than a paintball gun. You would lose the marking possibility that painball offers and the cost would be significantly higher for a suitably powered AirSoft gun. Just another potential non-lethal deterant for consideration.

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

I believe I'd have to catch him and shave his butt with my handy dandy dog clippers, then paint it a bright floresescent pink and send him on his way. Probably wouldn't bother the dog too much, but it would definitely wake up the neighbors! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

Geez, I'm out of touch for a day or so...and look at the response I got /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks all of you, I appreciate it!!

The one thing I was hoping for, was a way to stop this dog without harming it. and Cliff Johns has the right idea. While I'm not sure I see myself making friends with this mutt, I see his point. Maybe I'll try something along those lines. I just need to find a way to keep my anger in check when I find the mutt's "deposit" at the front door, or frozen on the garage door. My first reaction is to shoot the blasted thing, and believe me, the pellet gun I have DOES inflict some damage. I know this because I dropped a Cow with it once. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Please don't ask...I'd rather not talk about it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif But I did learn something from that ordeal, and I don't want to go through that again. Hence, this is why I asked you guys.

I think I'll try the M80's a few times, even if I wake someone at 3:00AM. If that don't work, I'll use Cliff's approach. But I have to admit, winning the trust of this dog and giving it a mohawk, or even a pink backside, is VERY VERY TEMPTING /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What\'s up with this dog...

I still have the fence charger I used once. Maybe I should set up a fence around the front of the house. Since this mutt whizz's on the temporary fence I put up, to block off the new lawn I put in last fall, I'm sure it wouldn't notice the difference if I modified it.

Ya know...I'm going to do just that. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Yeah, it might zing it a little, but at least it won't really harm it.
