Recently the 2008 Super Duty trucks by Ford have been hitting the dealers. I have noticed that most of the F350s are dressed to the hilt with >$50K price tags. Who can afford this pricing? Are the other manufacturers this expensive? I saw the review of the F250 diesel two weeks back in USA Today. The test driver noted a 6mpg average mileage! When my 98 F150 hits the age/repair threshold I will most likely look for used if this pricing continues. Anyone else disturbed by trend in cost versus value...especially from auto companies that are not exactly in good financial shape?

I talked to 2 different dealers about the new ford trucks. The selection was limited and like you said mostly higher end duallys and lariats. Both of them said that Ford now orders all of their vehicles for them of all makes and models instead of them ordering what they feel is wanted in the area. Ford decides on color, style, options, how many to give them etc. You can still order your own. My guess is with the new truck, sales are strong and people wanting the latest want their trucks with many options. I have not seen a gas model of the super duty yet at either dealer. Ford is going to send them loaded units which are selling near MSRP to the dealers while demand is good. Maximize profits while they can.

Give it 5-6 months and the trend will reverse, especially if fuel prices keep rising. I will probably get one later this year and replace my 1999 F250 V10. Still leary of the 6.4L and it needs to prove itself before I buy one. There has been some issues but few in number and no real trend or pattern yet. Nothing I consider a significant issue at this time.

Most reports for mpg are in the 8-14 range with the F450 with 4.88 gearing being the low end and pulling loads. 6 mpg seems awful. Mileage will improve as the engine gets broke in. The newer trucks with stricter EPA rules and the diesel particulate filters just are not getting the mpg of the older trucks. Also hp just keeps climbing for diesels and the mileage will continue to suffer. The Ford 6.4 has 350hp which is a lot higher than the older 7.3L

I'll throw in my two cents here. Since I was just looking at the New suderdutys. I agree the price is way high but the xlt trim is nicer than the lariat on my 04 250. The standard equipment is also much better than a few years ago. The diesel adds around 7k so a loaded 35k truck (add the diesel ) and bang price is through the roof. I think ford (and the other two) feel that the trucks are use specific and that folks needing a towing rig are going to pay what ever they ask.

I have a new 2008 King ranch Crew diesel. It was an expensive truck, but each of the big three can be spec'd pretty close to the same price. I was a little surprised about the price myself at first but after having driven the truck for almost one month, I can say if any truck is worth the price, it's this one. It has everything, and is solidly made. I also know the invoice pricing on the truck as well, and when I was looking, I found the trucks to not be marked up over invoice that much. Perhaps some dealers will "deal" more once the trucks have been out a few months but that did not affect me, as I got below invoice pricing on mine. I doubt it would have benefitted me much to have waited. The Ford employee pricing and executive pricing was not that inexpensive. As for the mileage, I cannot attest to the tester mentioned, but mine is getting about 13-14 in mountainous short distance driving, unloaded. I have gotten almost 17 on a four hour round trip, half pulling a lightly loaded (3000#) trailer. It so far does not get as good mileage as my 2002 7.3L, but it is not that far off, and I expect it to get better. It really seems to me short trips are really going to hurt the mileage on this diesel more than most. I would expect the 6.4L to get on average about 1-2 mpg less than the 6.0L in the same truck, but with the extra power and quiet refinement, it was worth it to me. I did NOT buy this diesel expecting great fuel economy.

It is crazy, my next truck will be used. I would never pay these prices.

I buy diesel for power and sound.

I ordered my 2008 F250 because it was the only way to get what I wanted. It only has 90 miles on it so I have no clue about the MPGs. I paid $3000 less than MSRP. If you can find a 2007 model Ford has a $3500 cash back and low financing.

why would you buy one?

if your that serious about needing a work truck why dont you just step up to a F450 and then you can easly get a "comercial" one with no bells and wistles for less!

Course if you are intrested in driving around in a pimped out overpiced payment dont let us stop ya ;)

:D I was thinking about pimping my ride - I will add a kicker boom box and a few LCD displays, and maybe some spinners for the duals:p

It is getting ridiculous. I have routinely saved 30% by getting a lightly, less than 30,000 miles, used truck. 30% of 40,000 bucks ain't bad. At this point, I would prefer a nearly new and slightly used non-epa-smog-choked diesel of earlier vintage.

I just bought a 2007 diesel F250 crewcab 4wd xlt. It was just under $50,000.00 I have 5000 miles on it already.
Just yesterday I pulled around 14,000#s to Lakeland Ga and pulled 12,500 #s back to Tallahassee. Plenty of power, took a full tank of fuel. But I wouldnt want to pull it with any less of a truck. (been there done that) Oh yea it as pretty as a birddog puppy.
