I saw the review of the F250 diesel two weeks back in USA Today. The test driver noted a 6mpg average mileage!

6mpg? 80,000 lb tractor trailers can get 6mpg. There must have been something wrong with that truck.

I purchased an 03 F350 4X4 Crew Cab XLT used in Jan of 04 for $30,800. It had 38K miles on it but it was what I wnated and was wholesaled to me by my cousin who is a sales manager at a local Ford dealership. In my opinion, this will probably be the last diesel truck I will ever own. It's the 7.3 and has no convertors, egr valves, oxygen sensors, and other EPA emission controls systems that will cost owners thousands to repair over the life of the vehicle. Don';t get me wrong, I believe in clean air. But we've gone overboard.

Unless the stripped down versions are significantly lower in cost I will be going the used route as the other equipment I need requires my cash flow as well. Speaking of cash flow my salary has not climbed at the same percentage increments as the truck pricing which means I don't see the same purchasing power now that I did 5 or 10 years ago. Well... got to go the Speedchannel is reviewing the new Superduty.

6 mpg with $3 gas/diesel = $30 per hour just for fuel if you drive 60 mph.

I cannot imagine getting only six MPG with these trucks. MY 08 250 is doing a little over double that during pulling. I am pulling a 3720 JD on a 20' 2800# tandem. My total towed weight is about 8000# and my pulling mileage is around 12.5 so far. Gross truck and trailer weight is 15,300# when pulling. I expect it to do much better after 2000-3000 miles but I pull on highway at 70+ and a lot of my pulling is done in hilly terrain. In combo driving, all local empty I got about 14 on my last tankful. It does better when I am on highway more. None of these trucks are going to "set the house afire" on mileage, but to me dropping only one MPG when pulling 8000# fast is not that bad. I do want my unloaded mileage to improve a bit more, and I expect it will.

The 6mpg mileage experienced by the auto journalist is certainly an anomaly for the Superduty diesel. I would hope that Ford has their best quality control measures in place to minimize variation especially since they are coming off a mixed owner impression on the previous diesel. Hard to spend high dollars on a mixed track record.

Ahh, thanks but I don't have a Dodge.

You missed the point...any of the New Emission Compliant Diesels...Dodge, Ford or GM will have to deal with these emission parts replacement costs...

And heaven help you if you pump in non ULS fuel...it really pisses off the sensors...

I believe that there was a press release somewhere from Ford that said the 08 diesel exhaust would actually be cleaner than the ambient air in highly polluted cities like New York.

I'm thinking, if that's true, that I could get a new ride and set up a stand on Wall Street, and dispense "clean air" out the tailpipe and charge money for it, like they sell oxygen in Tokyo.

No doubt the F250 Fords are good looking trucks. I have not priced the 2008's yet but when I priced the 07's Ford diesels they were $5000 more than a comparibly equipped 2500HD Duramax on their sticker prices - Is this a regional thing or what?

A friend of mine bought a 2007 diesel and told me he is currently getting 9-10 around town and he has 12,000 miles on his truck. The truck is an ext cab and he doesn't tow but does haul his tools around and occasionally some material. I was shocked at such low mileage - will this improve?
