I realize this is an old thread, but what I saw might interest someone considering a 3 pt. backhoe.
I was at a dealer a few months ago and there was a customer trying out a new L39 TLB. He had just brought his L2800 to the dealer for an estimate on repair. He had busted out a big chunk of the rear casting using a 3 pt. backhoe on it. His L2800 was out of warranty.
Funny thing was, the salesman I was talking to said that this was the second time he did the exact same thing to the L2800; the first time, Kubota repaired it under warranty. Seems like he would have learned his lesson !
After I looked at the big ( 6"x 6" ) hole in the rear of this guys L2800, what really surprised me was how thin the casting was. It seemed no thicker than 1/4" !
Just my guess, but I'll bet most of the older tractors have castings twice that thick or more.
At any rate, I know I'll never consider putting a 3 pt. hoe on any tractor of mine; just too risky in my opinion.

Totally different things.
But on that, neighbor dude has a orange one he can't get the top pin out,,,almost a U shape with a BH hanging off the end,,,it'll see my torch soon.

Castings can be pretty thin and still work well. They should be thicker in stressed areas, of course. Company I worked for made a sump casting for Catepillar. The casting was huge (about 3 feet by 2 feet by 18" deep) and most of it was less then .250 thick. Of course, a sump is a low stressed area and the most likely failure would be an impact on a rock.
Also, it depends what kind of casting this is...meaning a sand casting, permanent mold.
We also don't know how aggressive that Kubota owner was with his tractor.
I agree, if I were to install a backhoe, I'd want a subframed type. But AK, didn't you have a 'hoe on your 970 for a while?
As far as the 790, it's no telling how it happened based just upon the picture. I'm curious how it happened too.

I know a couple dealers (one blue and one orange) that won't even sell you a 3 PH backhoe because of the problems they've had with breaking castings.

The broke machine is actually a fairly new 3005 with 70 hours according to the add posted here --> 2007 JOHN DEERE 3005 Less than 40 HP For Sale At TractorHouse.com
The add says it has loader and "trans rear housing damage" I think that is the rectangular tube the drive shaft goes through and where the tractor is normally split for overhaul.
