These are all calculated mileage numbers in Imperial gallons. Us gal = imp gal divided by 5 x 4. We do very little town driving. kph divided by 1.609 = mph

2016 Duramax 3/4 ton not hauling anything 20+mpg recently replaced trans fluid with ams signature noticed a slight increase in mpgs and trans temp stays around 10 degrees cooler, Honda pilot 25mpg, my beater a older kia 4 cylinder 5 speed 30+ finally a 2018 chevy 4500 cutaway class C 9-10 mpgs all combined mpgs rarely putting the hammer down.

I keep it well tuned and the tires at maximum sidewall inflation pressure and my tires are LRR (low rolling resistance tires too.

Very consistent at 40+ mpg and that is with the ac running in the summer too. Keep in mind it's a 6 speed manual, not a slusher automatic so I can and regularly short shift it and I always anticipate my stops and kick it into neutral and coast to the stop. I'd say 99% of the Focus's sold (well was sold as they don't make them anymore) are dual clutch automatics and that is a trouble prone transmission from the get go.

Mine is a single dry clutch, with the German built turbocharged 2.0 engine. Took me quite a long time to get it too. I do get that mileage in the summer, in the winter it drops off to about 35 because summer blend gas is different from winter blend around here at least.

It has way too much power if you want to tromp it, like 320 horses at full boost. I have in the past but very infrequently. Being 73 and retired, I'm never in any hurry to get anywhere, anyway.

The only issue with the 2.0 turbocharged engine is, you have to keep up on maintenace and oil changes, they are extremely sensitive to dirty oil and dirty air filters and being a GDI engine, I have to clean the intake system regularly. Later GDI engine have a pilot injector in the intake to mitigate carbon buildup, mine don't. Mine runs dry so regular cleaning is important.

One thing stands out. Almost everybody has a 30mpg car. Most have a 40 mpg car.
It's clear we choose to save on or payless to travel. I'm nearly 70 and I plan to run the VW TDI until it or I die.
Looks like we only need the opportunity to own efficient cars and we will.

I think people get crazy about some this; the cost savings from 40mpg to 45 mgh is insignificant for most; while the difference between 15mpg and 20 mpg is huge. Also, it seems like some of the people most obsessed with these numbers, drive the vehicle way too little for the math to matter.

My work vehicle, I drive approx 4000 miles per month. Looks like right now, I'm sitting at 26.7 mpg over last 60 days or so; at $3.89/gal; that's $582/month. If that same vehicle got 35 mpg, that's still $444/month, or $138 less per month. That's a noticeable cost difference but not huge; and that's a pretty high milage per month, probably more than 75% of passenger vehicles. In order to move a 27 mpg vehicle to 35 mpg, while still keeping the same capacity, what is the cost?

If I drove a 1500 Ram 4x4 as a work vehicle (last truck, before we switched to exploders), 19 mpg=$818; moving to say 24 mpg=$648 or $170/month savings, with just a 5 mpg increase. I dont 'think' we really have the technology to make 30+% increases without major sacrifices in capacity.

When we drive our Suburban to Oklahoma, about 875 miles, we're lucky to get 17-18mpg. When we take the Subaru, we get 34mpg. That's 100% better mileage, or, half the fuel costs. Round trip it's a bit over 100 gallons of gas VS about 50. @ $3.89/gallon = $389 VS $194.

Daily driving, I only do 10 miles per day. I get about 12 in the Suburban and about 22 in the Subaru. So 50 per week in the Suburban VS 50 per week in the Subaru is $16 VS $8.8.

I work about 48 weeks per year, so $768 for gas in Suburban VS $422 in Subaru for the year if I drove that instead as my commuter vehicle. That's only a $346 savings for yearly commute, or, about a dollar a day if you average it over the year.

So, if you drive a lot, high MPG vehicles are well worth it. Not so much if you don't put in the miles.
