Wife's sister has a GSD and a black lab, one named Duke and other Princess. Wife says a Duke, Princess or even a King is ok but she has a god name Zeus her 115# GSD. This dog reminds me of the old Lassie shows where Lassie runs inside and want to be followed.
Several times now, Zeus has jumper up, opened the door (he does that himself if we don't bolt it) ran outside and then came running back, jumped up on the door, opened it ran inside and woofed a few times and ran back outside. Following him, we always find someone either at the front gate or meter readers inside the fenced area. Nothing gets in our yard that he doesn't let us know, not even a chicken. He loves to chase off flocks of blackbirds and he wont stop till they are all either in trees or flown away. Several times he has caught and pinned down geese that were in the yard (we have about 40 Canadian geese and a couple of semi-domestic that hang with them). He so far hasn't harmed any other than mauling them a bit with his paws. Once we caught him with a chicken in his mouth, taking her to the pond (maybe he though it was a duck and needed to be in the water). I once saw him with something in his mouth and called him over, he spit out a baby bird that he found in the grass. Bird was soaked in dog slobber but otherwise unharmed. I put him (the bird) back in a tree but don't know if he stayed. Zeus has the softest mouth I have ever seen, he wont snap something out of your hand like many dogs but gently takes any offering and any tidbit is thoroughly chewed not swallowed whole like most dogs do.
The only fault this dog has is he loves to get dirty(should call him Pigpen like the Charlie Brown character). He can follow the neighbor German Shepherd (DUKE) around and come back covered in mud/water, Duke will look like he just had a bath. Needless to say, he gets hosed off regularly. We have to sneak up on him though, if he sees us with a water hose he stays way off and no coaxing can get him to come.
