What's your dog's name and how did you name it?

Wife's sister has a GSD and a black lab, one named Duke and other Princess. Wife says a Duke, Princess or even a King is ok but she has a god name Zeus her 115# GSD. This dog reminds me of the old Lassie shows where Lassie runs inside and want to be followed.
Several times now, Zeus has jumper up, opened the door (he does that himself if we don't bolt it) ran outside and then came running back, jumped up on the door, opened it ran inside and woofed a few times and ran back outside. Following him, we always find someone either at the front gate or meter readers inside the fenced area. Nothing gets in our yard that he doesn't let us know, not even a chicken. He loves to chase off flocks of blackbirds and he wont stop till they are all either in trees or flown away. Several times he has caught and pinned down geese that were in the yard (we have about 40 Canadian geese and a couple of semi-domestic that hang with them). He so far hasn't harmed any other than mauling them a bit with his paws. Once we caught him with a chicken in his mouth, taking her to the pond (maybe he though it was a duck and needed to be in the water). I once saw him with something in his mouth and called him over, he spit out a baby bird that he found in the grass. Bird was soaked in dog slobber but otherwise unharmed. I put him (the bird) back in a tree but don't know if he stayed. Zeus has the softest mouth I have ever seen, he wont snap something out of your hand like many dogs but gently takes any offering and any tidbit is thoroughly chewed not swallowed whole like most dogs do.
The only fault this dog has is he loves to get dirty(should call him Pigpen like the Charlie Brown character). He can follow the neighbor German Shepherd (DUKE) around and come back covered in mud/water, Duke will look like he just had a bath. Needless to say, he gets hosed off regularly. We have to sneak up on him though, if he sees us with a water hose he stays way off and no coaxing can get him to come.

Our 2nd most recent addition of canines, 6 total, was the largest in a litter of 13. His mom was a black lab mix and dad was an unknown traveling man. Because of his size and energy, we named him Hercules. It wasn't long before he picked a new name for himself and now he is known exclusively as GOOBER :)

On the way home, my wife asks, "What are we doing to name her?" I jokingly said, "How about Dee for "defective"? And the name stuck.
That's too funny. You could have also named her Abby, for abi-normal.

I have a solid white American Bulldog named "Snapbean". The original one to have this name (name has stuck) was a true sport and people still talk about today. Long story but the name involves a stray dog, a trailer park and 200 acres of snapbeans.

Honest to goodness we once had to put our 14 year old Cairn named Max down due to enlarged heart and seizures. My wife had to have it done while I was out of town. It was at the after hours clinic. We had a toddler at the time, and my wife couldn't handle bringing home the poor dog to bury it, so she had them keep it in their freezer for a few days until I got home. So I drive over there to pick up the poor fella. We go out to a shed behind the clinic and there are three freezers. We open the first one up and its empty. We open the second one and the kid says is this one yours? The name on the box was "Lucky". Now all those jokes about one-eyed tailless dogs with a missing ear came back and I start laughing and the kid just looks at me.... "Ah, no. This is him over here." and I open the box to make sure its our pup. I had a smile on my face as I took poor old Max out to the farm and buried him. He had a pretty good life. ;)

Ours is named BEAR as he is not a barker, but growls/grumbles and makes a noises just like a bear cub. The boy has done this since we first seen him, it will hold his tennis ball in his mouth and bark/growl and makes the funniest noise. Sounds like he had/has a trumpet mute stuck in his mouth lol... Best dang dog & one of top two I have had or been around. If he was much smarter he could probably speak English ;)

When i had back surgery (he was just 14months old) I would point at something and ask for it & he would bring it to me. Drop something he will pick it up and hand it back, has figured out if he wants undivided attention he will stomp on the remote to (change channels or turn TV off.) My Avatar pic is of him when this was going on, he was/is a pretty good nurse & would have been a GREAT Service dog.

When he wants out he picks up his collar and hands it to ya, puts his nose on the variety of treat he wants at the time etc... He has one major problem that is he only comes when HE wants too, kind of a Husky issue I'm guessing... Head/nose down tail wagging and chasing some hapless 4 legged critter or his mortal enemy Squirrels ! :D

One other FUN thing is he has to get mommie prior to getting what he wants & make her squeal (ya I taught him that one) he will hold her down and lick the tar out of her just cause he and I think it's funny as heck...

We have a dog with two names.

It's Curley, our Springer Spaniel. Kind of an immature name but he is an arrogant, overbearing, pushy and obnoxious dog intent on separating you from your pizza. Still, he is lovably sweet and when his hair grows out long and curley (hence, his name) he looks far bigger, beefier and lazier than his 80 lbs suggests. That's Curley, and that's before he gets a haircut.

After a haircut, he's a whole new dog and unrecognizable to his former self. So much hair comes off that he now looks sleek and trim and could be confused as a ladies man with tortoise shell glasses and an ascot. That's the dignified Curley and while in this mode we change his name to "Sheldon". He loves it, answers to it and seems to behave as an entirely different and well mannered dog. Sheldon fits him perfectly.

He's in the Curley mode now but buzz cuts are on the way in the next week or so.
