Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Richard,
Honestly I'm not sure. I just assumed it's a Chrysler tranny.

Isn't the Allison a GM only thing?

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

I've got a '93 F350 CC. I bought it used at 90k miles with a rebuilt 7.3 diesel and have put on about 25k in 2 years. Best mileage has been about 18-19 hwy...worst was 9-10 pulling 3 horse trailer and pickup camper over coastal mountains. Best website around for diesels is www.ford-diesel.com and has a lot of information and helpful group of posters (like here). My simple thoughts on trucks...Dodge has a great engine with the Cummins which holds up much better than their chassis. Chevy diesels of the past were all around poor. GMC's new combination of an Isuzu diesel with an Allison tranny is an absolute marriage made in heaven if you can get past the sticker shock. I love my Ford, especially a crew cab. Although the 7.3 Navistar can not pull grades like a powerstroke, I think in the long run is more dependable and is less intimidating to look at without all the electronics/computers. I have not had a problem with mine(yet), but the E40D auto tranny has had it's share of problems. If Ford had the Alison, look out!

I bought my diesel with the intentions of seeing the odometer hitting 300K.

Just thoughts here...Not trying to cause any 'brand wars'.

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Robert,
Dodge came out this year with the optional Allison heavy duty automatic for the diesels.

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Richard,
That is really interesting! I will check the build sheet and book to see if I can figure out what's in it. It would be great if it does; that should be a beefy tranny.

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Yes it would be a nice one to have. The problem with the earlier dodges is that they would go through the auto transm. like water. That's why the autom. dodge used to be a gutless wonder because they tuned them down so much from the manual transm. The manual diesels were great but the autos didn't have much power. Then guys started turning the pumps up and tearing up the transm. on them. That was why dodge went to the heavier transm. so they could increase the hp. Ford did the same thing though. That auto they had ate autos for breakfast too.

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Robert...

I've got a 1999 Dodge Quadcab 2500 with the 24-valve turbo Cummins. I've had it about 2 years and out of 42 vehicles owned, it is my first Chrysler product. The only complaint I've got is the lack of leg-room in the extended cab. Other than that it's a fantastic truck. If I keep my speed at 2000rpm (about 70mph), I'll consistently get right at 20mpg. I have gotten up to 22mpg. If I drive 80mph my fuel economy comes down to around 18.5mpg. Actually, even pulling a load, that's the worst mileage I've gotten. With or without AC on, there doesn't seem to be an effect on fuel economy.

Although I know I'll trade trucks before I even come close to the rated life of the truck, I truly believe that ole Cummins would keep go'n... 'n go'n... 'n go'n for as long as I needed it to. As for the additional cost of periodic service... noth'ns cheap anymore /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Richard,
Next question is how to turn the pump up /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I'll wait a few miles before messing with stuff like that though...

Mark Chalkley is running 400+hp from his early turbo-Cummins, if memory serves me right.

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Sorry Robert on the new ones it's not so easy. They went to all electronic like the fords so now it's all controlled by a cpm. It used to be all you had to do was turn a few screws to turn the pump and hp up. Now you have to buy a computer chip, injectors, etc. to get that kind of hp. ie. big bucks. If you want a big bang though for a little bit of dough you can add proprane injection to it. That's what I did with mine and I love it. Unlike the chips, etc. your mileage improves a little bit, not alot, and your engine actually runs cooler. On my 95 powerstroke I added about 55 hp with it. You can set it to come on at whatever boost you want. I have mine set so that when I am going down the road and hit a hill with the trailer it kicks in. That way I never slow down on hills, really nice.

Re: What\'s your fuel mileage

Richard,
I'll wait a bit to boost hp, what with warranty and all. I did find out it is the Chrysler tranny...

1989 Ford F150 Manual Overdrive Trans and 300ci six, to and from work (40 miles one way) highway 19.5 mpg with tailgate removed. My 91 Crown Vic gets 21.5 on same trip (302V8), Wife's 88 Olds Custom Cruser gets 20 even with the 307V8.
