I've noticed some fluid on the L rear tire this week so today I raised up the rear and removed the wheel. When I started the tractor there was a steady stream of fluid from the shaft, which stopped when the engine was shut off. Is this likely to be simply a seal that I can replace or probably something a hydraulics shop needs to work on? I think while I'm taking wheels off I may try turning them around for the wider stance and see how much this improves my hillside stability.

If you do, you will never want to turn them back!!!!

I had one leak under warranty sent it to PT for repairs. I think you can buy the seals from PT and do it yourself. When warranty on my 425 is over in a couple of months I will probably use a local hyraulic shop for those type of repairs. If you will be doing it yourself I know you will need a puller to remove the hub. I think the rest of the repair is pretty simple.

Thanks I'll see what Terry has to say on Monday. When puttng everything back together did you bleed the system at the same point as when changing the filter?
Hey 14 are you in a pretty hilly part of NC ? I assume so if the wider stance makes so much difference. Has anyone else out there turned their wheels around?

Bleeding is not required when working on the wheel motors. Make sure you have male and female plugs when you remove the motor. Female to keep dirt out of motor and male to keep the hydraulic fluid in your tractor that way you wouldn't have to clean up a ten gallon spill.

PS. My wheels are reversed and I am having a hard time going back.

A couple of words of caution. You will be suprised how fast all of the hydraulic fluid can be pumped out from even a small leak. Check your hydraulic fluid level before starting the engine again.

I was told by Power-trac many years ago (maybe it has changed) that if you go into the wheel hydraulic circuit you must attach a 3 micron filter and purge any dirt that got in. Talk to Terry and get the details. The main variable displacement wheel hydraulic pump can be damaged very easily.

Good luck on your repairs.

I talked with Terry, He recomended that they fix it rather than me. Since I'll be there Tuesday I'll just take it with me. He said it would take about 30-40 minutes. He just said be sure to plug the lines so my fluid would not all leak out.

The wheel motor is off and in the floor of my truck. Checkbook is in hand as well as invitation to see the new showroom. I pick up my brother at 5:00 and hope to be there by 9:30 or 10:00. I'm planning to bring home a 10 cu ft bucket and phd with 12" auger, as well as a wheel motor that doesn't leak anymore.

nice showroom , pretty much everything is on display inside. They fed us lunch before we left. My wheel motor was fixed while we looked around.I dug a hole in the yard and decided on a 9" auger for the phd, got home with phd, auger , light material bucket, and wheel motor . It took 10 minutes to reinstall the wheel motor and everything is working great. db

Glad you got the wheel motor repaired and back on the machine and all is well. Don't sound like you had any trouble taking the wheel unit out and replacing it. When I was buying my pt it looked like it would be easy to work on as compared to the other tractors out there and that was one of the selling points for buying the pt. I am sure that there are other repairs that would be more difficult to repair but all in all I think they are a simple machine to work on. Hope you have fun with your new toys.
