Wheels bolts coming loose

was it the last wheel you put on/tightened up? was the compressor getting low? I find torque sticks need excess air gun action in order to work properly. We've been using them at the shop since '92 with no complaints, 50/50 mix of aluminum & steel rims.

Now that you mention it, I believe it was! Although I have a fairly small compressor so it starts and stops multiple times during a 4-wheel tire change operation. It's very possible it was at the low end of the scale when the wheel in question was being worked on. Interesting! Do I now have an excuse to present the CFO with a proposal for a new "and much safer" air compressor setup?

Thanks.. that would explain some things and hadn't occurred to me before.

<font color="blue"> "Buy a pair of rubber dishwashing gloves if you intend to use some anti seize compound. Don't slap any mosquitoes when their is compound on the gloves."

Good advice. I had a mechanic at work tell me one time that you could put a drop of anti-seize on the top of your head in the morning and by the end of the day it would be on the bottom of your feet (and everywhere in between).

It's good stuff though - I use a lot of it.

Trev:

You may also have to hold the air ratchet on for a certain time ??? to get the proper torque. Not explained well but there are others here that can. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sounds like a fine reason to upgrade... Just think of how much more you could get done /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I had one loosen up on a trailer once. It was on a steel wheel.

My theory is I got in a hurry and just ran them down, but did not do it in order.

I think it is important to follow the specified order, just like torquing down a cylinder head or intake manifold.
