I'm glad your children are alright.
Of course you have to make your own decisions about the things I am going to mention...I made mine years ago. We live in a house that WAS quite isolated 10+ years ago. I have taught my children about guns since they were about 7 or 8, and actual shooting began soon after. When my oldest was about 14 I decided I trusted him enough that I believed it to be less risk to share with him how to access a firearm than it was to leave him (and sometimes his twin brothers, 5 years younger) defenseless. We conducted drills repeatedly....his role was to get them all to our safe spot and retrieve the firearms I had available to him, theirs was to call 911 if necessary once there. Never had to activate the plan, but I just felt better knowing they had a fighting chance if someone tried to break in.
The number of home invasion robberies seems staggering anymore, and they are all too often fatal. We live about 45 miles from Cincinnati, and it seems we hear of several a week now in surrounding communities.
