when will led lamps go mainstream for auto's

I think head lights would need a heater that would come on when it was cold or have a snow sensor.

The mercury in florescents is blown out of proportion. Get rid of your old mercury thermometers first. They have 100 times the mercury of a light.

ya but fo every old mercury thermometer there are 1,000's of florescents.

I thought you would say the light last 5 years and the thermometer last 5000.

I think the ratio is 20 to 1.

Power plants emit way more mercury than we throw away with CFL lights.

The headlight pictured is made by Trucklite. They are available at any good parts store. They are pricey, but are great lights. I have one on my 2004 Victory Touring Cruiser motorcylce. I also changed out the spotlights on my bike to Whelen par 36 clear LED's. What a difference from incandescent (sp) bulbs. And since motorcycles don't ususally have a lot of amps to spare, I don't have to worry about overdrawing my bike's electrical system. I've changed every lamp (except the speedometer) on my motorcycle over to LED.

I'm still waiting for a lighting manufacturer to produce replacement capsules so I can change over the headlights in my Ford trucks and cars.

As my screen name says, I am a volunteer firefighter. All the warning lights on my vehicles are Whelen LED's. Very bright lighting and minimal amp draw. I no longer have to worry about the charging system of my vehicles keeping up with my warning "power".

The efficiency of an LED on the use side is only part of the equation. What's the energy use to produce LEDs and CFLs? I don't know the answer to this, but as more CFLs get used we have special requirements for disposal. There is just more to the equation than the amount of electricity they use while lighting our homes and cars. I don't know the answer, but in a bet my money would be on much higher cost for production of CFLs and LEDs as well as more energy required in the manufacturing process.:confused3:

reminds me of the electric car dilema.

I remember reading somewhere a while back about what it took to put a prius on the road. especially the battery pack(s) :) hidden environmental, and other costs..
