The shindaiwa C4 hybrid is an excellent example of a possibility.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge 2 stroke fan. I'm just afraid the legislators will somehow outlaw them.

They should have left tractors out of the tier 4 rules. At least those up to about 130 hp.

Re: Where痴 the best place or way to increase performance with a chainsaw.

Even a dry sump system depends on gravity to get the oil down from the head into the crankcase where it can be picked up by the scavenge pump (or to get oil in the head down to the pickup located there). It also depends on gravity to separate oil from air in the tank.

Husaberg's first four stroke dirt bike didn't use an oil pump. Instead they used the crankcase compression with strategically placed reed valves to move oil/oil mist up from the cases and into the head then back down. It worked better than it sounds but not well enough- they went to an oil pump in the next version.

Aerobatic aircraft engines have oil pickups in the valve covers and the crankcase. There's gravity check valves to decide which pickups suck the oil depending on engine orientation.

Think about a 4 cylinders horizontally opposed aircraft engine that's rated for aerobatics. If it's flying at 90 degrees to the ground, two of the cylinders are facing the ground and two are not. There's oil on the bottom of the pistons on the upward side and oil in the valve covers on the pistons on the downward side, yet the engine gets full lubrication.

Also, think about radial engines. Only the upper pistons are in the "correct" orientation, there's a some laying on their sides and some upside down, yet they all get lubricated.

Re: Where痴 the best place or way to increase performance with a chainsaw.

there is a place that got 50 HP from a 50 cc 2 stroke engine, that's 1 HP per cc. normally aspirated. this was news years ago..

I don't know, but it was a racing engine on a minibike.. I guess just to prove it's possible.. not much technical info at all was let out..

I have found that handing my Stihl to my son is one of the best way to increase performance and hours of work. He cuts - I drag and pile. Every spring - thin my stands of young pines - identify - cut - drag & pile - come by in a week or so and chip all the piles.

This thread wasn稚 about a sharp chain or not. It was about modifying the saw and how much power is really to be gained. And I知 pretty sure the carb on my saw needs adjusted rather I decided to mod the saw or not. It starts harder than it used to and doesn稚 seem to reach as high of rpm as it used to. It also seems to smoke a little more.

Fair enough. You did mention something in your OP about local shops not knowing a sharp chain...so that might lead one to think dull chain could be an issue.

I have 2 Stihl saws and probably cut a hundred or so pines/aspen/fir a year. Without a doubt the best single performance increase is a sharp chain. A saw with a sharp chain will out cut the same saw that is muff modded with a dull chain. I think that is why folks were worried about the sharpness.

I use this product from Stihl to field sharpen my chains. It works super well and is cheap. Not sure if it works on non Stihl chains, but others may.

Now if you have super sharp chains already....then its time to mod. For that I am worthless, sorry. I really don't have a need to mess with my saws..they are fast enough as is. I have MS 362 (25 in bar) and MS 241 (16 in bar).

you actually could mod your saw with a snowmobile engine, and get incredible cutting speeds!. that's what the competition saws use.. using your original engine, a good modder could get many more HP from your saw, though.. you could get some help from here, you may want just a little boost, just let them know what you want to do..
