Just wanted to take a quick poll to see if there are any other Canadians following this forum. Always kind of nice to find out if anyone is a little closer to you geographically. I'm located in Edmonton, Alberta. Anyone else around???

Northern Ontario here, the Upper Ottawa Valley, right on the old Company of Canadiens fur trade route. . Of course part of living in Canada is recognizing that many of the participants here are much closer to you geographically than I am. Well, it does seem closer though since we share similar degrees of cold and snow, and we probably can talk northern lights.

Nice to hear from you Tom. Yes, I'm a ways away from Northern Ontario, but always nice to connect with someone who know the Canadian side of things. I've found that a lot of the suppliers talked about here either don't or won't ship anything up to Canada.

You guys are getting hit with a bit of a harder winter eh? Ours has been unreal!!! We have about 2 or 3 inches of snow left (of the original maybe 6") and our temperature has been averaging about +2 or so for a high. Not your typical winter in Alberta that is for sure. Also kind of prevents me from using the new 5' rear blade I bought in preparation for all that snow I was going to have to remove off of my driveway.

Have a good one.

I live about 20 minutes outside of Fredericton, New Brunswick. I go to Fredericton High school right now. I'm in the middle of exams. Our winter has been pretty good. We've got snow, but no big storms like normal.

As you've probably guessed, I'm (still a) Canadian ... from your neck of the woods. Raised in Edmonton and occaisionally back there after moving away after high schhol. Before moving to Michigan 3 years ago, I had an 80 acre place in near Thorhild and drove cross-country every day to Fort Sask to work.
One thing I miss (besides the lower prices for almost everything back there ... don't bel;ieve all the storeis about the US being cheaper!) is land. I sold the 80 acres and a 10 year old house w/ 2 new garages for $105k (I'd just finished paying off the mortgage) ... and that was a downpayment for the 8 acres and 10 year old house I bought here.
But ... people are friendly (as you can tell by TBN), climate is better than I thought ... and there are 2400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Michigan! On the other hand ... after Jasper and Banff ... the skiing sucks!

too bad that common sense ain't

Oh man! I was in Jasper and Banff two summers ago. That is one exceptionaly absolutely incredibly beautiful area! We only spent a couple days up there, but gosh was it something!

How is the skiing there? I thought that area was shut down by the snow. When we went on the monster bus tour of the glacier in Jasper, they said thier building gets to temps of -30 in the winter.

I dunno, Wingnut -- I've had only one opportunity to ski Banff, and I decided to let it slide.

A couple of us were sent on a business trip to Calgary during the winter. We spent most of our time in the basement of a telephone company central office, testing out our computerized phone testing equipment. We were scheduled to stay there a week, but our plan was to sneak off to Banff for a couple of days of world class downhilling (we weren't world class -- the snow was).

As it turned out, there was a cold snap that week. Now, I'm from Californy, so cold is anything below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, but this was minus 40!!! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif The TV stations were broadcasting warnings that skiers should wear the appropriate clothing 'cuz with the windchill, the mountain temperature was something like zero degrees Kelvin. Okay, maybe not quite, but close enough for me. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif They showed video of what they called "low temperature skiers". YIKES! These guys were dressed like astronauts! No contact whatsoever with the outside air, and self-contained breathing gear!

So, like I said, we decided to skip Banff that trip. On the day before we left for home, somebody came downstairs and said, "Come see the Chinook, eh?" I had seen Chinooks before (made by Toyota, weren't they?), so I didn't understand the big deal. I have to admit, though, when I looked up at the sky and saw that someone had drawn a huge arc from horizon to horizon, seperating black from white, I was near awestruck! As it eventually passed over us, the temp went from minus 40 to plus 40 F. Never saw anything like that in my life.

Of course there was a great deal of snow melt all of a sudden, and then the sun went down, re-freezing everything. That's the first time I discovered the joys of black ice.

But that's another story. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hey Wingnut,

Well things have increased around here in price anyway. I live just outside of Sherwood Park (as I'm sure you know just South of Fort. Sask and East of Edmonton) and nothing is cheap. But it is Alberta and at least we aren't paying Prov sales tax like the rest of them!!

Haven't been skiing this year at all. We have had so little snow that the base at Marmot, Sunshine, and Lake Louise are all really poor. No one I've talk to has been impressed with the skiing...and with lift tickets close to the $50 mark...I'll wait for decent snow.

No snow mean no scraping the driveway though...that's what I'm really upset about! :)

Just spent one night in a campground in Jasper and drove on down through Banff, summer of '90. Beautiful country, and the campground was full of elk. And I'll bet it's pretty in the winter, too, but wouldn't want to be there in person to see it./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I may not be quite as cold natured as Harv, but I do like that thermometer to stay above 40. And I've never had any urge to slide down a hill on a bed slat./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hi Harv,

Yup, occasionally it does get just too darn cold to ski! I kind of draw the line at about -30 degrees Celsius. Even at that you ski a run, go in and warm up, ski a run, warm up. Nice little cycle. You should try and be up here in about April though. On a nice spring day you can ski in a t-shirt, shell pants and sunglasses....and lots of sunscreen! Now that is sweet!
