Where are all the laborers?

/ Where are all the laborers? #31
A few years ago a friend of mine hired a high school cheer leader squad and their coaches to do a bunch of farm labor (mostly pick up root pieces and rocks out of a new field, and put in hay from another). Couldn't get the football guys to work. Said it was the best workers he ever had for a summer. They were trying to raise money for a trip somewhere and made enough to cover most of their costs. He included food and drinks along with actual wages. Make sure you follow whatever (child) labor laws there are in your state and have insurance (workman's comp or whatever).

We used to use youth from church groups to do yard/brush clearing. They worked hard, too.

Definately try the firehouses around you. I know most of the guys that work the 24hr shifts around us have second jobs.

Another potential source is to check with your local National Guard. It depends on the area but they are a good source of young men with some training, usually have to have at least a minimal security clearance and can use our support.

If you need to hire someone just to pick up rocks or move a garden hose why hire someone? Get off your tractor and do it your self.
I want to pay people to do jobs that they can do to free me to do jobs I want to do myself. Transferring initiative is a real trick. Everything takes time. Herding people without initiative takes too much time.

You made no sense at all in your statement.

I've been on both sides of this, as an employer, and an employee. IMO, when you are willing to pay a reasonable amount, a decent person will hang around. No one wants to work like a slave for $10 / hr (how much does gas cost to get back and forth to work?). Only option there, as far as I can see, is illegals. Unfortunately, alot of guys that are worth more than they are getting paid move on to something that pays better.

I agree with you . But the op wants to have a man work like a dog and then pay him less just so he can get rich. No one wants to work like that.

Do you have a question? Im not going to try to teach you reading comprehension. I wouldnt even try to pay someone to do it. Couldnt afford to hire that level of expertise.
