Oh I miss my Direct TV... too many trees where I live now. I cut a bunch out, but I"ve got a long way to go... Think of me as your watching those clear pictures and CD quality sound! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm missing Direct TV myself a bit this week, because we have Comcast cable now instead. Friday evening about 6:15 p.m., it quit working on anything above channel 99 in the living room. I called Comcast and the lady there had me do the usual tests to reset it (which I'd already done, of course, but they always assume that you have no idea how to operate a TV). She concluded that the converter box was bad and I could take it to their office and exchange it for another one or she could check on the next available date for a service call, but it might be quite awhile. So I checked the TV in the bedroom and it worked OK, so I moved that converter box from the bedroom to the living room and it worked fine there. Saturday, I took the "defective" converter box to Comcast's office, stood in line about 20 minutes (only one person working) and exchanged it. I came home and my wife said the other converter is now not working in the living room. I hooked up the new one in the bedroom and it worked fine, so I called Comcast again and we went through the routine again until the young man at Comcast concluded that the second box has gone bad (it was replaced last Easter). So I take the second box back to Comcast's office and exchange it. I came back home and the one I had just installed in the bedroom an hour or so earlier has now quit working on anything above channel 99. I hook up the other one in the living room and it, too, only works on channels 99 and below. So, I do all the "reset" routine again, and they both work on 99 and below and 102, 103, and 114. None of the HBO, Encore, Starz, etc. channels work; just a black screen with a message to stand by, this channel will be available shortly. I call Comcast again. The lady says she sends messages to our boxes and the channels come up one at at time until they all work; should all be working in 20 minutes. An hour later, no change. I call Comcast again, and we do all the routine once more. This time the lady concludes there must be something wrong with the line and the earliest available time for a service call will be Thursday morning. So now we're waiting for the service man who is supposed to be here Thursday. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bird,

I feel your pain.

I keep getting calls from Comcast to come back. I have Comcast cable for the computer. Work pays the $58 a month for that. I got a call the other day from Comcast telling me for an $1 extra a month they will give me the TV portion, 125 channels or something. The Comcast person could not understand why I did not want this great deal. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Reading your post I now know I do not want this GREAT DEAL!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bird,

Just hook the cable to the TV -- don't use the converter box at all -- see if you get lower channels, then you can conclude it is in fact the converter box.

I've never had a converter box.

Dave, I get the channels up to 99; just don't get the ones above that. You don't need the converter for their "basic" service which is those channels with one and two digit numbers. And we can get those whether or not you have the converter box hooked up. And since it's the same cable and my Internet service is working normally, I find it a little hard to believe it's a problem with the wiring, but then the mysteries of TV and computers are over my head anyway.

Incidentally, my daughter next door has the cable Internet service that her employer pays for and she recently added the cable TV (to 4 TVs for 2 people /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, but of course, it's the same price no matter how many TVs you hook to it). And of course, no converter box is needed.

Ha! Cable 'service' -

Cable came to town and I paid the salesman $100. But they never wired my block. I kept phoning them when I saw a truck in the neighborhood.

About year three they sold to a larger cable company and another salesman appeared, offering a 39 cent per month introductory special. I showed him my $100 receipt and asked him to apply it for 21 years prepaid.

To my surprise I got an invoice in the mail confirming my $100 applied to service at 39 cents per month prepaid, no expiration date shown. Months later they wired my block and the signal finally came on.

A couple of years later I started getting nasty theft-of-services notices from the cable company. I don't think I ever did see a normal monthly invoice. Each time, I mailed a copy of my $100 receipt and the 39 cent/month invoice and got no reply for a year or so.

Then the signal was turned off and 'repo man' appeared at the door demanding the converter. I gave it to him and got a receipt for it. As I suspected, I had to show his receipt to a couple more signal box repo employees before they gave up on me.

Overall results - nearly four years of (basic) signal for my $100. I guess you could call that a draw. I haven't subscribed again.

I have the same problem. The tech that came said it is my coax. I have copper on the outside, he said that it loses signal over a certain frequency. I have other wire run, rg6, i think, which has silver on the outside.

Just a thought.
Have a good one,
Neil.

Neil, I suppose having the wrong coax is a possibility, but it's what was installed by Comcast one year ago and it worked until Friday evening.
