Haven't seen any posts for a while from Thomas. Did he say he was going to be gone for a bit?

It's been in the back of my mind, too, along with Mark Chalkley, Wen and a few others.

It's almost as if some of these people have lives outside of TBN. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

BTW, John. Nice gif. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Can you convert some of TBN Gif's to be truly emotional like this...
rolleyes.gif

Make up some that are Sad, Crying, Jumping for Joy, Steamed, Hot, Kidding, Stern etc.

Thanks Harv!

If you guys want to make some new faces, you're welcome to... I have it on my list of things to do next time we upgrade the forum. Maybe within a few weeks. I have some sets already saved... I just need to sort through them and decide which to use. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Muhammad,

I know Harv posted a bunch of alternative emoticons, & I have a few myself. I'd be happy to upload them, if you think you might get a round toit. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Been missin' Thomas, too! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif His is a refreshing voice.
Seems like he DID say he was gonna be absent for a time, ...but I can't remember which post /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif .

Hey GlueGuy,

Once took a sculpture class, and was gonna carve a nice round-tuit from soapstone as an object-d'art. Ended up using my stone for something else, but I still like the idea. Was thinking of bas-relief wide letters curving around a sphere "nested" so as to fill the surface with the four letters. Did a few sketches, but they're long-lost by now. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Oh, well, ...add it to the list (Project number 7,4639 or something). Should have made it number 1! Kind of proves its own point, ...if you don't get a round-tuit FIRST, you'll never get anything done!

I certainly could, John, but let me say this about that:

Without actually saying so, Muhammad appears to have adhered to a self-imposed set of guidelines that make a lot of sense to me. Maybe I'm over-interpreting what I've observed, but the "official" emoticons have been designed to be as innocuous as possible. That is, they physically fit nicely into a line of text (only 15 pixels tall), and they have an extremely small footprint (i.e. your animated eyeballs smileycon weighs nearly 7 times more than it's inanimate counterpart).

Also, the official emoticons are really very well done. They may look like simple cartoons, but when you examine them closely, they are very high quality renderings. If you compare them to, say, AOL Instant Messenger emoticons, you'll see what I mean. I'd hate to see our amateur efforts pervade the look and feel of TBN.

I have violated these "guidelines" my own self, so I only use them for special occasions, like when the context just begs for a little visual help. Since Muhammad is dedicated to making this forum as fast and efficient as possible, even for those with slow modems connected by 50 miles of barbed wire, I even feel a little guilty for starting the signature icon fad.

Just to keep rambling on the issue -- I love pictures and visuals, but I rarely use in-line graphics of any size for the same reasons I just mentioned. They actually make for very cool messages, but I suspect the "Attachment" feature is there to keep large files out of the main flow of the messages. Again, this is just Harv's personal take on things.

Muhammad has hinted about posting "official" guidelines when/if it becomes necessary, so since he hasn't done that yet, we can probably assume that there is no perceivable problem at this point.

Wow! I just put a lot of words in your mouth, Muhammad. Hope I didn't speak too far out of line here (but then, I am paying that $1,000/mo fee /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif).

Harv,

Thanks for the... comments. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I didn't make the current images... they were made by someone else... here's the new set, also made by someone other than me. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I guess they are based on whatever icons you'll see online. From instant messengers, forums, etc. I've gotten permission to use these, though.

This list is, of course, subject to change without notice. I'm not set on any of these really... especially the new animated tongue. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif If you have other suggestions, let me know... upload/post them here. I'm really open to any suggestions as long as they look good... even if it's the same emotion as these listed above... but a different icon, upload it and we can decide from there.

As for guidelines for file and physical size... yes, they have to be small and small. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I'll compress any icons to be as small as possible before they're uploaded for regular use. The sig files are what I'm more concerned about in terms of a limit on file and physical size, etc. But I haven't thought about that for a while. The new server makes me forget.

BTW, these don't work with markup tags yet...
