I forgot to mention, I was pretty dead set on buying a Wallentein chipper. I really do believe that they have the best design for my uses and would last as long as I would ever need. The ONLY reason I didn't end up buying Wallenstein is because I found a used 6" chipper for sale and ended up purchasing that.

One of my favorite features of the chipper you bought is the rectangular opening with a wide throat. I have a sawmill and would really be able to use that wider opening than my current 6"x6" opening when chipping slabs. If I had bought new, it would have been the Wally.

I don't blame you one bit. I looked for a few Echo Bandit chippers used, and found some... but I just didn't see any that I liked.

Someone had a Wally BX60 for sale on a local Craigslist earlier this month, but I missed out on that one. They are hard to find.

I have a BX62. Bought about 5 years ago. I got a real good price, last one, so no color choice, mines red. I would have liked green.
Couples things. I have to start my PTO at idle or the shear bolt shears. I could be the heavy flywheel or my PTO does not engage smoothly, it's all in right now. The other is it does not like to chip grape vines or fresh heavily leaved brush. I now cut and let it set until the leaves fall off and no longer even try to chip grape vines.

Zebra,
Red & green - good Christmas colors. I start my '42 from an idle also. Its just a lot easier on the entire system. What is it with grape vines? Do they have sap/pitch like my pine trees? I know my discharge chute used to get so sticky and plugged - being patient and letting the trees/limbs dry a year has been my solution. No more long handled putty knives and kerosene soaked rags on short broom handles!!

Good advice, thank you for sharing that. I'll make sure to start my PTO on idle now, too, as it tends to jump a little upon engaging it like you mentioned.

That's interesting about the greener stuff I can see that being an issue. I'll have to see how it goes for me. 85% of the stuff I have been chipping has been dead for a good while.

Dadgum drought of 2011 still killing trees and felling limbs.

An altogether handy tool in the woods is a battery powered Milwaukee Sawzall.

Great for doing limbing. Much safer than a chainsaw.

Removes chipper chute plugs in seconds.

I bought mine on amazon.com.

Congrats! You'll be very happy with it. I have the 4" one and barely ever have to trim branches. I've found that it runs best on dry material. With fresh cut material or a lot of leaves you need to feed a little slower and I try to stagger branches so when the leafiest part of the previous branch is going in the base of the next one is. Having solid wood mixed in helps to push out the leaves. They tend to clog if there's a big volume or a lot of moisture and not enough heavy stuff to push through and clean out the shoot. You can assist it by spraying wd-40 or similar on the chute if you're about to do some wet stuff. I also find a little faster than PTO speed helps on small stuff. I've chipped brush, vines and all kinds of wood. It's fantastic to have a chipper on the tractor because you can chip as you go or just do periodic cleanups and there's no need to pile the branches until you get a rental then kill yourself to get it all done in time. Good luck and enjoy.

Good call! I have a corded DeWalt sawzall, but a cordless would really come in handy!

And that's exactly what seems to happen! You end up busting your tail from sun up to sun down all weekend to get your $'s worth, then are completely shot on Monday when it's time to get back to work.

The grape vines were just going thru, hardly cut up, then they balled up in the chute and stopped it up. I do not think sap was the problem, they were not dried out, they were very flexible.

One other thing I did was load up the instruction book holder (black tube) with shear bolts and nuts so they would be handy when I sheared one.
