One other thing I did was load up the instruction book holder (black tube) with shear bolts and nuts so they would be handy when I sheared one.

Really good idea there!

I have never sheared a bolt on my '42. My hardest wood is old, dry locust. 99.9% of my chipping is P. pine and it is easy. I think I make up for all the shear bolts during the use my snow blower. First pass of the season down the mile long gravel driveway always eats 2-3 shear bolts.

Yowzers, I bet! I think most of the wood I'll chip won't be too rough on the chipper, either.

Is there a chart somewhere that shows common woods from softest to hardest? We have a lot of pine, cedar, and sweet gum on our property.
