No recomendations west of texas?? I love the intermountain west. We have high desert, mountains, rivers, lakes, skiing, hunting (if that is you gig) etc. In the summer the days can be in the high 90's or low 100's and when the sun goes down you are putting on a sweater as it gets cool at night. There are no bugs to speak of, if I get one or two skeeter bites I will go in as they are out tonight.

It is great, clean and fun. Come on out, we would love to have you look.

South Bend, Indiana area is pretty nice. 2 hour train ride to Chicago for the night life, museums, art and culture. 30 minutes to nice sandy beaches and dunes on Lake Michigan. 4.5 hours by car to Michigan's U.P. or Canada. 3 or 4 major amuzement parks within 4 hours. Lots of fields and woods still available. Cost of living is still dirt cheap. Change of seasons is wonderful. All that's missing is the rolling hills of Southern Indiana and it would be perfect. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm sorry - but I've lived in Indiana ..... I've always said "my three kids were all born in foreign countries ... 1 in Thailand, 1 in Germany, and 1 in Indiana".........Peru ... The worst winter I ever experienced was there 76-77

I have been sitting up here in the mountains at 8500 msl for the past 20+ years so I suppose that I like it. My 7.5 acres looks out on a valley that is recovering from the forest fire 2 years ago. I can see mountains 58 miles away out of my front window. I really like the seasons. Cross country sking is available out of the front door. Snow sking is 2 hours away and so is pro football/baseball/basketball. I have never been to a pro game yet!! I prefer the hot springs and forests. Deer/elk wonder around along with the occasional bear.

I moved out here after spending exactly 2 years in South Bend, In. It a great place to start out with a chaep cost of living and friendly people (Turkey Run in Brown county was great!), but I learned that I have to see the sun occasionally between October and May. The winters really got me down because of the constant cold/grey/overcast. Out here there are times in January that I wear just a sweat shirt with a sunny 50 degree temperature. Folks out here start getting really cranky after 3 days of not seeing the sun/blue sky.

I do have to get down to my old stompping grounds (New Orleans/Gulf Shores, Al area) once a year to thaw out and satisfy my seafood fix so that offers a nice contrast to where I normally spend time. I also learned that I don't like the heat of those places during the summer.

I guess that it really depends on what your needs are. Do you mind lots of overcast grey days? Are you an "outdoorsy" kind of person? Do you mind crowds?

Western NC is starting to grow real fast due to retired folks getting tired of the grind in the cities.
Asheville/Hendersonville/Waynesville area should have jobs in your field.
The biggest boom is in that area.
I'm looking that way because in less than 6 years, I'll be retired!
I figure we'll need hospitals, grocery stores, dr.'s offices and a good range of temperatures. Western NC has that!

Well, here comes Tropical Storms Bonnie and Charley.....I'm just glad they aren't named Bonnie and Clyde!!! We are building a house right now and we spent all evening/night putting plastic over the roof trusses that just got shipped. Looks like another turd floater is in store for our area. Hopefully the wood won't get too soaked around here. OkeeDon, batten down the hatches on your place down there. No telling where these guys will go, but my bet is 9 total inches on 5624 Dianthus St. Green Cove Springs Florida.

I am one of those who left Florida and enjoy living in Maryland much much more. I lived 15 years in the state of Florida -- Daytona Beach, Clearwater, Bradenton and Cape Coral -- and now after living in Maryland for several years, would never consider moving back.

Trying to pick one place in the country as being the best place to live is almost an impossibility -- one person could possibly narrow it down to a handful of places, everyone has different interests, desires, etc. that makes creating a list for the masses futile.

Ahh, would that I could, but I can't, so I won't. There may be some things out in Okeechobee that can blow around, like some building materials I've moved there, but nothing I can't afford to lose. My son-in-law is an Okeechobee County fireman, and they have been called in for mandatory overtime, starting tonight until the danger is passed.

Over here on the East coast, we won't get hit as bad -- fringe winds, etc. Charley is projected to hit somewhat NW of us. But, I have a LOT of stuff exposed at the commercial property I was remodelling; I guess what will happen will happen. The only thing I'm going to try to get done is for someone to go over there and put up the awnings on my motor home; I had them down while using it as an "office" for my remodelling, and now (with my health problems) I can't get over there.

We'll be fine here at home in Port St. Lucie; bring in some patio furniture, and we have 3M hurricane resistant film on all the windows.

I grew up in Hendersonville, NC. It has always been a popular retirement area. Alot of residents were summer residents though but I think more and more are becoming full time. I moved to Atlanta about 20 yrs ago, but recently purchased property back in Hendersonville. Alot of very good people up there and I still have alot of family there too.

I am in the international business and travel abroad, but would not want to live anywhere other than in the USA.

One day I will be back to Hendersonville for good and out of this rat race - that's for sure!
