Which 3pt. logsplitter for tiny 2305?

thanks, I appreciate the help! this unit, with the power beyond kit, can run a backhoe attachment and not a splitter? I don't see how this could be. this is why I posted in the first place, because i did a search and came up empty handed with this kind of info on small tractors. much appreciated info, thanks, Trev

I never said you couldn't run a splitter, I just said it would "be painfully slow" with only 2.9 GPM to work with.

looking for a 3pt. logsplitter for my 5gpm hyd. system in a JD 2305. preferably one that can split in both directions. any ideas? thanks, Trev

The answer is none if your delivery is in the 3gpm range at 2kpsi as others have quoted specs. You would need at least a 4" cylinder to be marginal at this pressure. At less than wfo the cycle times would be close to a minute. The beauty of standalone or pto systems is you can use a dedicated two stage pump that delivers 10gpm at low pressure and shifts to a 2gpm delivery when it encounters something hard. This lets you keep the cycle times within reason. For trouble free splitting at 2kpsi you will need a cylinder bigger than 4". 10gpm delivery at the pre shift pressure would be an absolute minimum with a larger cylinder unless you like to watch slomo and never get tired of it.

In reguards to the idea of 3pt hitch and your tractor hydralics, First, how much are you using this splitter? and second why tractor powered? Years ago I bought an American Wood splitter 24" model, Great splitter but way to low to the ground for splitting 300 or so cord a year. I couldn't justify selling it so I made it 3pt hitch with the help of Tractor Supply and a few pieces of planking. You can probably pick up a 3pt hitch frame for 100 bucks or so (Part Number 21-33435 or 21-28210) will work and then any motor driven splitter that is in your budgets reach. Couple of hours on a saturday and your in business. With this setup raise or lower to fit your backs content and if need be block it up and leave it by the pile and get double work out of both peices of equiptment if you can find the help. If you got extra help wandering around I could use some extra help at my place

thanks guys, that pretty much covers it. cycle times that slow defeats the purpose of the hyd. log splitter, so pto pump or stand alone unit sounds like the way to go. i'm swaying towards stand alone, because 300$ for tractor plumbing, 400$ pto pump, 1200$ for splitter, stand alone units w/honda engines at Lowe's are around that price and are useable right away.

I'm a fan of stand-alone splitters myself... I like to have the tractor free to do othe tasks... including shuffling the logs around. If you do go with a 3 point splitter with PTO pump, there is no "tractor plumbing" for this. Jusp hook the splitter hoses to the PTO pump (if you use quick disconnects, it makes it easy to use the PTO pump for other applications). The PTO Pump just hooks onto your PTO mechanically (just like your PTO driveshaft for other implements).
