If you can find one, I would use a single bottom moldboard plow. Besides loosening the soil, it will turn the soil which will kill both the grass, weeds, and insects. A middle buster or sub-soiler will only loosen the soil.

I agree ... turning plow ... lay it over in the fall and disk it up in the spring.

A Sub-Soiler or a Mid-Buster.??

You can get one that has both points.Then just change out the points for the job.A subsoiler is needed, no matter how you till,to loosen the soil deeper, so it will hold more water.A turning plow is good to have also.

For a small vegetable garden in the back yard I prefure to moldboard plow late in the fall. Then in the spring the ground will dry and warm up faster letting you in to work sooner and get a jump on tilling and planting. I wouldn't worry about a sub-soiler, vegetable gardens don't need it.

Now if you are talking about a large food plot where you plan on making wages, I can't help you with that. I'm just in it for the fun and exercise.

I agree on the rototiller. If you use a middle buster, you'll need to till or harrow or HAND WORK to get it anywhere near flat to plant.

Hand work? What? I am confused. Professional truck farmers (gardeners) of have used plows and drags forever to prepare their soils. There simply is no way I'd roto till 5 -10 acres or more. It would take forever. A middle buster does indeed turn the soil over. Not as precisely as a single share, I grant you, but saying it "only loosens" is not accurate. It is true that a sub-soiler is used to loosen sub soil.

Tilling is awesome, if expensive, for smaller garden areas.
