I think choosing a hand gun for self-defense MUST come down to these three things:

1. Comfort of the gun in your hand
2. Safety features of the gun
3. Ease of operation

Notice I never mentioned caliber, # of rounds it can hold, ballistics reports, etc.

1911's are great, e.g., because they usually feel great in the hand, and have two very nice safety features - the grip safety and thumb safety. They are also heavy, so they reduce recoil. Some models, you can even lock the grip safety for extended times of storage (leaving for vacation, eg). And they are very easy to operate.

I popped off a round the other day when I thought my ear was covered. OUCH! It really hurt and my ear was ringing for a couple days. NOT GOOD! At least this was at home and not on the range... That sounds like a song.:laughing::laughing: A poor guy at the range forgot to put on his hearing protection and went through a string of fire. Thankfully it was only two rounds but there were almost two dozen people firing those two rounds.

He hoofed it real fast to get his ear protections. :D:D:D

Shooting under cover, even outside, is noisy and I don't like it especially with rifles. Hearing protection helps but that sound still bounces back down and is amplified. When I shot in Service Rifle matches, the range had a few positions that were under cover, but I always went at least a few positions away. Some people liked to be out of the sun and being in the sun in the summer was not fun but that amplified sound under cover was not worth it to me.

Dan

And a lot of hunting rifles and competition AR rifles have muzzle brakes to reduce felt recoil.. they work, but boy are they loud, especially anyone off to the side. talk about ear rippers. whew..

With ammo so high I shoot very little...I just picked up a carbine I had repaired at my Gunsmiths...he is out in the country like me....so he wanted me to fire a few rounds...first one and then pop them off rapid fire is what he said...30 cal...So I did..but I only fired 6..they were my cartridges...LOL

I am going to wait this ammo thing out...I still say a shotgun is best with maybe #4 shells....or the Judge that shoots 410 or 45 cal...remember the adrenaline will be surging so you want something forgiving, that does not require aim and shoot but rather point, pray and shoot...

Dan, the Dallas Police range is outdoors, and yes the sun is tough in the Summer. However, it's been raining; just light rain, so the officers who had to qualify today had to shoot in the rain. They only stop if there's lightning in the area. Yesterday was a beautiful day and I was the only retiree at the 8:30 a.m. qualifying rounds (they have qualifying rounds scheduled 4 times a day). But when I saw the weather forecast, I knew I didn't want to go today or tomorrow. I think shooting in the rain is less fun than shooting in the summer sun.

Nah, shooting in the rain makes a man out of ya!:laughing::laughing:

Now if it is COLD and RAINING that is a different story! :D:D:D

I have only had one qualification canceled one raining, cold and WINDY evening. It was the wind that ended the day. We got through daytime but in the evening the wind was so bad the targets were getting ripped off the stands. It was raining off and on but wet paper targets had no chance of staying on the stands. Even dry paper was being ripped off by the wind. Twas a miserable evening made worse by having to go back another night.:laughing::laughing:

I have shot lots of matches in a cold rain, we just bagged the targets with see thru dry cleaning bags. But the worse was rain mixed with sleet, (this is in the first liar doesn't have a chance category:D). But we really did shoot a match in sleet and cold. When the sleet became about an inch thick on the ground the match director called the match as being a safety violation, which is sure was. I was darn glad to get the belt off and back in the truck with a heater.

...I can't here the spring peepers (pond frogs) when I lay my head down on the right side...sux to miss out on the things ya love because we where young and bullet proof....ma always said I would pay for it when I got older....
I have a different problem. I hear the spring peepers every night all year long. Any time it is quiet. Comes from standing too close to the 105's without that sissy hearing protection. sigh... too soon old - too late smart.
