Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!
Well, darn while out and around I came across an oil test artical in Sport Rider. It is motorcycle oriented to be sure but they tested a wide range of synthetic, conventional, auto and cycle oils. The test was not as comprehensive due to cost as they would have liked but it is a nice artical. This artical and test is like so many others I have read over the years whether of bikes, boats or cars the haters of Mobil 1 will be dissappointed. The Mobil products aquit themselves well in all catagories including against Amsoil in the vaunted 4 ball test---Sport Riders conclusion---NO DIFFERENCE. Top honors in heat evaporation test--Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 15w-50 (auto oil) had more anitwear agents and Moly than Amsoil. The testing was independently done by Analysis Inc in Ga. and the results are interesting. There are differences in some oils and it shows up here very well. . The roller shear test was only performed on bike oils and Mobil's product again was at the top retaining the highest percentage of viscosity. Also interesting was the room temp viscosity flow test with 10W-40 oils and 15W-50 type oils. Mobil 1 15W-50 (auto oil) flowed more easily than all oils including Amsoil save for a motorcycle product marketed by Yamaha and Silkolene 10w-50.
What does it all mean, well for one thing there are differences between oils that can be scientifically demonstrated in the lab. Do engines need these levels of protection, well, some do, probably some don't. Like taking a distance and then making each step half of the other--soon we are down to infinity and likewise the differences we argue about probably don't count for a lot in average conditions and engines, are you average /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif?
