Not a bad idea.

I think this winter I am going to try some round bales. For the past 3 years we have used only square. We don't go through THAT much hay in the summer so square is fine but in the winter I'll probbaly use both round and square.

If you decide to feed rounds, go to TSC and get a round bale feeder. Get it with a "haysaver" skirt". It will keep the horses from strewing the hay all over. When you put the bale in the feeder, don't forger to remove all the twine.

... and a welder too while you are there, to put the legs back on after they break off in 3 months!!! Bump is sideways a few times while dropping a new round bale in, and the legs will come off for sure. Really flimsy. I think the actual solution is to knock all the legs off, not put the broken ones back on...

Thanks, that is a nice bale feeder and much cheaper than what I have seen around here.

Don't get that feeder. That's a cattle feeder. Your horses could hurt themselves. At best they are going to rub their manes clean off.

This is more what you want for horses. Still not my favorite, but it would be ok. I will try and get a pic of the ones we sue.

Yeah, I know. I was just looking at the picture and hoping they also have the open top kind. I have seen them called them "tomstone' style because they look like tombstones sticking up surrounded by 2 feeding areas. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm new here and this has been a long strand. I guess I'll start at the top with the oil. I use Mobil one in my gas engines. I just sold a 1995 Bronco with a 351 that I bought new. I started useing Mobil 1 shortly after I bought it new. I canged the oil every 5k. At 100,000 miles there was no notceable oil consumption at oil change time. That sold me on Mobil 1. I have a Duramax that is 20 months old with 50k on it. I have been useing the Valvoline blue max. I wanted to switch to the Rotella synthetic but it has been $19 a gallon here at wally world. They just dropped to $13 a gallon and I am putting in the Rotella this morning. Now I hear that they are going to stop carrying that product. argh ! I intend to use Delvac 1 if I can find it in the future. I considered Amsoil but I cant bring myself to do buisiness with a company that conducts their affairs that way..IE We''ll sue em if they void your warranty. Not what I want to hear from a company the first time I contact them. I will probably stick with the JD oil in the JD just because I like those nifty little John Deere paper bags from the parts Dept. lol. In regards to all the Truck talk I sure wouldn't be dissapointed if someone left a new generation Diesel in my driveway from any of the big 3. No glocks but a Kimber or two and a new Dodge 1500 reg cab with the Hemi for the Boss to drive to work.

I just lift the bales up and drop them in the rings. Other guys will move the bale and then pick the ring up and move it over the bale.

You don't keep rain off the bales. With any round bales they are usually kept outside. This is the purpose of net wrap. The net wrap helps the bale to shed the water off of them. Even the strings will work somewhat for this. Someone mentioned cutting all the strings or wrap off. We always leave ours on and put the bale in so the round part is up. This will help the bale shed water as it is eaten down and protect the bale. If your animals don't go through a bale in say a couple weeks I wouldn't even consider feeding round bales as you will waste too much. Unless you wanted to have the round bale outside and fork the hay off and feed it.
