Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

The same basic statements applies as paint on the outside is just cosmetic so too your statements on such things as coolers and guages are cosmetic to the engine serving no basic function other than to be there not having any bearing if something for instance happen to idm ipr etc..

Yea that must be why Ford outsells ALL the others combined 3 to 1 with the powerstroke over cummins and duramax. Must be a real crummy engine to keep outselling those engines year after year after year after year.

Say what you want about warranty but each and every mfg. can and does do it everyday.

BTW you are completely wrong about why they cancelled the v6 diesel as well but I won't even go into that.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Well, again, what is this XLA?, is it something real or is it like New Tide vs Old Tide with better birightners? If someone were to do a spectrographic analysis of old Coke and New Coke would there be a significant difference? MCN did such a thing for oil and did not find much difference between oil brands within a "class" of oil. I expect the same with so called Mobil 1 Supersyn, I doubt much difference would be seen with an analysis from their previous product but--but--that hype surrounding a product does not mean the product is bad--or-- good for that matter.
Speaking of piston cooling, jetting oil to the underside of a piston is fairly common in performance engines I believe.
Why do people get angry in certain types of threads? it is afterall an oil thread and as such most of the evidence that will be presented is antedotal. Some people use whatever is on sale, some people have long histories with a particular product. Some think oil is oil and don't want to hear different etc. That is to be expected.
I used oil analysis on my aircraft in the past, also did it on my Subaru way back and only recently stopped doing it on my little Toyota. It is kinda interesting. It does not in my mind proove though that I am better off having used Mobil 1 over Rotella or Bluelight Special Oil unless I had purchased a second Toyota and driven it exactly the same way with the other oil, then I would have a limited baseline. Meanwhile I am confident that there has been sufficient testing, studies and research to defend synthetic use when extreme conditions are expected even in the most expensive engines including diesels. I am also equally confident that in less than the most extreme conditions a quality conventional oil will perform adequately and cost effectively. J

Well, I would be driving a Ford 6.0 Powerstroke if the things would run right. I read all the forums, pros, cons, etc... Everyone said the Ford Diesel had too many problems.. I looked at them anyway. Go and test drive a few and see what happens. I wanted a crew cab dually, but not one that stumbles and leaks oil from day one. Look under the trucks, they leak! The low end power is missing some where in the 15 reflashes. I figured by now the problems were over, not.

I was a Ford man, I'm on my second Dodge. I'll try Ford if they ever start building a better product. The truck hauls butt over 2500 rpm and is very quiet inside. Trans shifts great, but the computer problems and the 43 + engine issues, most without factory fixes is really going to hurt the Ford diesel market. When the new trucks on the lot have power problems and oil leaks, you have a piece of junk. Or a dealer service shop queen. They won't be # one in Diesels if they keep putting out $40,000 trucks that stay in the shop for things that should never be a problem in a prodution engine. The unsolved problem was in the 50's If Ford can't fix the problem very soon, they will be # 3 ..... No Ford 6.0 Powerstrokes for me right now. My cummins runs fine, slower yes, but, it runs.

I'll take a Lighting though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Think you'd find a real difference between new coke and the original coke.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Well first of all let's stick to facts. The facts are Ford has a limited # of problems. #1 is an oil leak. For most this has been fixed by a new rear main seal. #2 Low power ONLY in 6 speeds. The autos don't have the low power issue. #3 A rough idle on startup or sometimes when warm and idling. There was an injector problem but that has since been resolved with the new injectors. This is a completely new engine and design. There are bound to be some problems no doubt. My 2002 was a dog and never did run right. After they finally did the buyback and I bought this one is has run flawlessly. I'm not saying some people haven't had problems, but knock on wood, mine has been great so far.

Did you ever drive one of the first cummins? I did. It was a dog. They have since made I don't know how many revisions to get to the point they are now. Some good and some bad. Overall has it been a fantastic engine, you bet. Has Dodge has some serious issues with brakes, rear-ends, and transmissions? They sure have. Does that mean it's a poor truck and nobody should buy one? No it doesn't. Is Dodge the only truck that doesn't have a five speed auto or the engine braking? Yes it is. Ford and Chevy have a superb system there.

Every engine and maker whether it's Ford, Dodge, JD, Kubota, NH, etc. is going to have issues at one time or another. Usually they fix the mistakes and go on with a great product.

Yes the new powerstroke has some growing pains right now. Is it one heck of a winner though? Yes it is. Is Dodge a great truck and the duramax? Yes they're both winners. Each brand keeps raising the bar. That makes it great for those of us that drive them.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

I test drove the trucks, the auto has low power and leaks etc. There are many problems that have not been fixed yet.

This is an average Diesel Stop post:

"Yeah, that's about right. Only it's a LOT more pronounced with the manual trans trucks. I can Idle mine out in 1st gear, stand on the accelerator, and usually make it to a count of ten before the turbo spools up and the truck kinda takes off. It is moving during that count of ten or so, just VEEEERRRY SLUUGGGGIIISH. What a PITA! My old Cummins would have melted the rear tires instantaneously if you did that. Hey, maybe it's Ford's new "traction control system".

I'm not comparing Dodge Cummins to Ford. The Cummins has been on the market in basic form for many years and is proven in bigger trucks. Great engine. I think Ford should not use the public for testing. Way too many issues, the dealer couldn't give me one good runner to test drive.

A local dirt contractor with a fleet of problem Fords is not happy with this screw up. Ford can't fix them fast enough here, some fixes not known yet, R15 is still in the works I think. They are switching to GM right now, too much down time. Eveyone I know wants their Ford 6.0 Diesels fixed. Many still want the truck and are dealing with it, its not a small matter.

Ford has screwed me on 3 trucks. I think they are no worse than Dodge or GM and I will buy a Ford again, I really like how the new trans shifts. I've had bad trucks from the big two. Ford was the worst with front end problems on two trucks.... lots of welding and shop time. Its not easy to get them to do a buy back, lemon law takes time.

I was going to try Ford again untill the test drives. The truck does run great when you get on it. Throttle response was really bad on one auto. The boost hit hard, but nothing down low, something was wrong. I know they all don't act like that, but many do. The ones I test drove did. All crew cab F-350s.

This is first hand and I don't like buying trucks that need new engine seals when brand new.... Ford should fix them before the sale. There is no telling how many Ford 6.0 owners think that their trucks are running like a "diesel", because they don't have anything to compare too.

I have a 91 Dodge that was ok, no real problems. 98 was a huge improvement, almost no problems at all. Both gas powerd. Now an 03 CTD, only time will tell.

Also had three company fords, a few GM's. Have a 03 F-150 4.6 V8 now with 4K, runs perfect. No problems. Just returned a Grand Cherokee. Still have a big black Caddy. I'm not stuck on one brand.

Most people think Dodges are junk, I've had good trucks from them. Only one A/C problem. But, thats just me. My brother had a ford buy back. My uncle has had a few GM problems.

I try to get the truck with the least problems at the time I purhase. Sorry if I stepped on your Ford. Just stating what has happened to me concerning the new Ford 6.0. I'm glad yours runs well.

On edit: the latest reflash is here I think. Here is a link to a positive 6.0 owner: http://forums.thedieselstop.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1319347&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Bottom line is all first years with new technology are a crap shoot. When I was truck shopping the 24V Cummins was getting flak from the 12v "purists" and a couple of years later the Duramax/Allison combo was getting complaints as well about shifting and idle.

I think the Powerstoke 04's will be here anyday and the problems will be much improved.

If you look MOST of the problems with the new releases by all 3 manufacturers are software related. Reflashes, tranny shifting problems. Computers do great things in these modern diesels...when they finally get them right.

The new Powerstroke trucks do seem to have that 'blah" feeling off the line, but while my buddy was complaining he was smoking the tire on our test drive. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Maybe more of a"seat of the pants" thing or "mushy" pedal than a real performance issue???

Here in NY we hear that the HP Cummins won't be available in NY with the auto due to EPA issues come 2004. With the auto we drove a 03 2500 Ram Quad Cab that was slower and less responsive than my truck and I have dually CC with 100k miles? Not a good thing for us NYers if that EPA thing is true.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

The HO is better, runs nice to me. Much better than the old 165 hp version I had last. The 04 should be an all 50 state truck. The R15 flash will fix most Ford problems sometime next month. I would make sure I got a post rear seal fix engine, which I hear is sometime in 04. It will be a brute when the bugs are gone. I wonder what GM is going to do. Before long we will have 400 Hp at the rate these engines are going. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
