Which oil is king?

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Cat uses mobil and DDEC too all there oil products are relabled mobil products for them to publicaly recommend rotella t is flawed no such official recommendation exists also alot of turbo charged small diesels have oilers on bottom too vw's on top of list. I have some lubrication machinery and diesel progressive books that have tackled alot of this discussion about 3 years ago during the pc-9 Ch-4 and pre-egr problems they had.

The warranty simply can't be voided by adding parts it's a legal document of expectance of service or general liability clause to failure. there's a law and i doubt after working with manufactures that they would actualy give you a written void because you add guages or a transmission cooler. They all do have have this clause ex.. If you add a guage drill into the manifold and it cracks and pieces fall into turbo it blows apart and crack a piston or something like that yes it would void due to direct line of failure can be traced but just because you have guages and the engine runs rough because of a pcm or idm failure is silly never seen it done maybe your talking about firestone tires maylay ford made millions on tires on labor + service

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Have to completely disagree with you here Shady. I know a number of guys who have had their warranties voided by the mfg. In every owners manual it specifically states that any aftermarket additions to the vehicle can void your warranty. I personally had my warranty voided for gauges, an aftermarket fuel filtration system, and a transmission cooler. You can say all you want about the Moss/Magnuson Act etc. but all the dealer, mfg., etc. has to is put a couple little words in the computer and you are voided. Sure you can get a lawyer, fight it, etc. but the mfg. is backed by the owners manual.

Yes, I think alot depends on your dealer. Some are good and will work with you, some even sell chips but others are looking for any way out. Same as out of warranty work, I have had a major problem several hundred miles past warranty and they covered it. Chevy wanted nothing to do with it and left it up to the dealers discretion. I was more than a little nervous though.

Why take chances, I'll wait until the warranty expires for any radical alterations.

"I am familiar with the study you are looking for. It was done by API for ASTM standards."
----yes, thanks Daryl /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif, that is the study I was looking for. I cannot find my copy. A few years ago when we moved here many of my papers were damaged by a flood while in storage /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif.
I don't just make this stuff up, as a trained scientist I am very skeptical in general and know how to seperate urban legend from fact. Anyway, thanks Daryl for the info.
So is all Rottella now have the XLA package?
I am not going to go off on several of the statements about Rottella 15W 40 being synthetic but I do agree it and Mobil Delvac 1300 (1200?, never seen that) and other quality conventional oils have manufactured components. Some are in fact syn/mineral blends and they usually say so. Mobil 1 is Polyalphaoleans, a synthetic fluid, fully manufactured from non petroleum products.
Yes, my aircraft engine has piston base cooling, a jet of oil is directed to the bottom of the piston to take away heat, I like that concept and it does add to the work an oil has to do--all the more reason for a high temp stable synthetic--too bad the lead is incompatible with current syn fluids. I hear Mobil is at last reintroducing a blended syn oil for aviation piston engines which use 100 octane Leaded fuels. Should be interesting.
So, exactly why would you not want full syn Delvac 1 squirting on the underside of those hot psitons instead of Delvac 1300?
Recommending a type of oil on the valve cover does not mean the synthetic version of that oil would damage the engine. I would be using synthetic if those were my engines /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Did you know that Mobil first started developing synthetic oil for diesel use in large diesel engines used for oil well drilling?

( Oils are basically classified as 2 types, parraffin based oils and petroleum based oils )

Is my old memory failing? Unless you're talking about synthetics, I thought they were both "petroleum" products and the two types were "paraffin" and "asphalt" based.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

I really didn't want to get into this discussion at all, but I am naturally inquisitive. My dad was head of analytical research for the now defunct Republic Steel Corporation and even though he passed a number of years ago, he still holds a number of patents for laboratory equipment and testing procedures.

Like I stated in the beginning of this thread, the BEST oil for you is one that is readily available, is cost effective, meets the manufacturers API requirements and you are comfortable using. As long as you follow the manufacturers recommended change interval, a warranty problem due to lubrication should not be an issue. I try to avoid all the hype that oil companies set forth. The same holds true for tractors, automobiles or anything else for that matter (wives included)!!

After all, that's what makes America great, the right to choose and have your own opinion !!!!

It's Wednesday morning and I have 58 acres of wheat straw to round bale today. I hope the lube oil in my Kubota is up to the task, it will probably be hot today. As usual, I'll post some pictures!!!

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Look Shady I've never seen the pyramids of Egypt but I"m pretty confident that they're there. Just because you don't think it's true it can and most certainly does happen. If you'd like I will sure scan the documents from Ford and email them to you if that's what it takes. It says right on there that the problems with my truck were due to gauges, the fuel filter, and the transmission cooler. I went through an 8 month battle with them. They can, will, and do eliminate your warranty. They don't have to have a reason either. I also wanted to take the speed limiter off of my Grand Prix, tops out at 95. I was told if I did that my warranty would be voided. They would redo the programming but my warranty was gone. If you modified the vehicle you're out in no mans land. My buddy that has a duramax went through the same thing. He had the problems the other guys have had but he had a chip on his. Warranty voided. My brother put a bigger exhaust on his truck back in 94'. That was the year they had the trouble with the air cleaners and engines were seizing up. Ford tryed to deny his warranty but our dealer stepped up and got him a new engine. I could go on with other people I know. Dodge, Ford, and Chevy are cracking down hard. I guess you can think what you want about it but I'm letting people know that any deviation from the owners manual and you face losing your warranty.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Here's one of the letters Shady. If you'd like I will copy more of them if you need more proof.

BTW the crossover line was put on to help the injector problems by another dealer. The fuel inline filter was put on in TX when the truck broke down there at a dealership. Texas was having alot of dirty fuel problems at the time and they put this on at my expense. And the transmission cooler was put on by another dealer in Idaho when it wouldn't quit overheating. It took letters from five independent mechanics, three dealerships, and $4200 in lawyer fees and 8 months of time to get this reversed. Was I in the right, I sure was. Did it matter, heck no.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Well like i said i worked for ford at dealership and never seen any problems and had previous experiance with 2 other dealers before i started into that profession and still say they can't void the warranty of engine if you paint the outside your logic is rootly flawed but if people let them walk over them go for it. I think fords **** anyways and would never own a ford powered ford.

That's why they canceled the V6 powerstroke i was going to go to alabama and be a test cell runner monitoring engines and doing some research as to best export the pcm programs but they shoot them self in the foot they knew 99% of people would want an international engine vs a crummy ford junker /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did someone mention having a warranty voided for 'paint the outside' of an engine?

Yep, that's what I'd call getting walked all over. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
