Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!
TresCrows- Oil analysis is not the end all but it give you a good baseline to go start with. If I have (2) oils and the engine is running correctly and one comes back better then the other, one is of lesser quality or just not right for this application. So you can use oil testing to judge oils. It also helps notice a problem in the future but it also says a lot about the oil too. If the OX levels are high then the oils additive package sucks.
Again in MY applications certain oil performed poorly in my 1997 Ford Powerastroke . The truck worked great but just thought the quality was not there. Very cheap for the price you pay.
I tried Cummins Blue=ok, Mobil/Delvac=ok+, Ford oil=ok, Fleetguard=ok+. I tried them and left in for 3K miles each and was not impressed. Does this mean there are junk oil? Not to everyone I guess, but I sure as [censored] would never use them in my engines. I am sure people like there “good-old” oil along with their Ford vs Chevy debates; however, things do change. I tried the oils that people said worked great. Well, not in my app and you could not give them to me to user. Nor would I even use some $2.50 qt oil in my BX, Lexus, or my GSX-R motorcycle. Not even my wife's MB. Then again I would never own an American car either. This is also weird. My car says use regular oil and her Mercedes-Benz only says to use synthetic. Weird /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Also I lot of oil companies will NOT give a fixed drain for diesels since there usually burn like crap (ie, fuel in oil, heat, not running right etc). I should not say fixed but they really do not like to extended drains much farther then the manufacture.
Lastly, there is no one oil good for all applications. In my applications (which are only 5 or 6) the oil I chose is great. Does not mean in the next guy's car it will be use as good. It should be close if the engine is running correctly. The oil test should be very close but I would not expect the same.
*oh, I work in the aerospace industry and we also use oil testing in our apps. All engines from Boeing 777, New JSF, 737, B1 /B2. They all use synthetic oil and do use oil testing. But then again oil tests mean nothing since the planes are always needing parts. If the oil tests come back high with some element they change 90% of the engine. We engineer this engines so tight and they still are maintained hog's. But then again the spare parts is were we make the money.
So to close, use whatever oil you want. If you think it is Mobil, use it. Wal-mart, use. I know what protects and is best in my apps. I did not spend a lot of $$ on cars and throw in some $2 QT of oil. Pay now or pay down the road.
The neverending oil. It is also as bad as the Glock vs HK people? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
