Which oil

   / Which oil #21
Typcially I only put on enough hours to change the oil 1 time per year. The local climate will see below zero in the winter and 90+ in the summer. I really do not what change the oil each season, and am wondering if 10w-30 (appropriately rated) is acceptable to run year round, or if I am better off with 15w-40.
Thanks for the help.

We are in the same boat so I have moved to 5W-40 Rotella for year round in the diesel tractors and two big block gas engines (for the zinc mainly).

I used the 0w30 in 2 diesels: our 1983 240D Benz & my 4010 CUT. The rest of the vehicles/engines are gasoline. It isn't rated for 10k miles and the emissions equipment on our 2010 VW TDI. It requires 5w30 Mobil 1 ESP or Castrol 5w30 SLX.

Which 0w30 is that?

True and I agree but on the flip side most 5w-40 are Cj-4 rated and emissions on tractors (for this spec) are not needed.

I still wish they would made a 0W diesel oil...:)

JD makes 0W-40. I just put it in my machine.

Gee, JD oil has some high limits on ash levels now. But I think Rotella 5-40 is very close to these #'s and I would assume 30 to 40% less in price too. I will never use JD oil..

After looking at our mix of older equipment the 5W-40 Rotella seemed like the best for us to standardize around. There is a lot of great oil out there today so it is hard to 'go' wrong when buying oil. The fact I can buy it 24/7 at WM and at the best price in town makes it even a better choice for our needs.
