Which one is more tractor?

When I was mentioning a larger engine, I should have clarified: more cubic inches. M5040: 186 and the 4720: 148.9.

Personally I would say the Kubota was more tractor. Hp ain't everything.;) That said I guess a lot would depend on what you are wanting to use it for. The JD should be more manuverable and easier to haul, but he extra weight and size of the Kubota could have real advantages when working it also.

The Kubota's more tractor for sure. As said above, horsepower isn't everything, there's a lot more that goes into making a tractor than horsepower. Look at all the specs, the kubota is a utility tractor made to work, a real tractor. The 4720 is more of a toy designed for the weekend 2 acre ranchette owner. I'll get a lot of howls from guys on here for saying that because most here are compact tractor owners but it's true. The kubota is going to be a much more capable machine.

Well, it's a bit much tractor for two acres. In fact I think any reasonable person would consider it capable of some light industrial use by say . . . a contractor or business owner.

That said, CumminsLuke and you both present the argument that this isn't an apples to apples comparison. However, there's no need to be derogatory by calling the smaller JD a toy. That'll just subtract from your premise, giving it say CUT weight, and not Utility Tractor weight ;)

I would take the American "toy" over the "tractor" from the far east. When it comes to getting PTO work done, HP trumps cu in.

You might want to check a little closer pard, if the newer 4000 series Deere's are like the 4000 series Deere I have, then they too come from the same place as my Kubota M7040.

Sorry about it pal, but beginning in 2005, JD started producing the 4000-20 series in Georgia, USA and they are powered by the American, JD Powertech engine, Not the eastern Yanmar which may drive your machine. A word of advice to y'all, think and verify facts first, type second for hearsay is best left unsaid.

I've been around a lot of "real" tractors and I've never seen the brake petals on the left on them!

Sure does screw with the real farmers heads when they see them on a few of the compacts that are built.

Most when told of the advantages of brake steer just laugh as they have already bought front end parts for there four wheel drive tractors.

JD is 50 PTO HP
Kubota is 45 PTO HP.

Both have enough PTO HP for what I need.

The 4720 weighs 4300lbs
The 5040 weighs 4550lbs

The 4720 3pt lifts 2500 at 24"
The 5040 3pt lifts 3300 at 24"

Both have about 17GPM of total pump capacity.
